Checked my timing belt tonight and was shocked to see...

...that it is really loose. Like I can slide it back and forth on the teeth of the pulleys. There's some tension there, but enough slack that I could probably slide it off if I were a total masochist.

I just had it done and they said It shouldn't need adjusted.... it's also looking a bit scuffed.

Any chance my tensioner's gone away? Is there any good way to 'ballpark' check it by hand?

try to twist the belt between the inlet pulley and the oil pump pulley, you should be able to twist it about 90 degrees. No more, no less. You could get a Krikit gauge and do what the book says but the twist method is pretty good simple check.
