handbrake checking

Recommended Posts

need a little info here.

i need to check the handbrake pads to see if they are ok, went to put it on when car in drive and as drive a little sloped it moved, i got foot on brake though. so i guess they are worn or need replacing.

is there a how to here on this and who or where can i buy the pads from please

gotta get the timing checked tomorrow as its misfiring a little bit , but nothing to worry about, going to strip the carbs and clean them up also replace some of the hoses etc this week.

also change the bushings in the gear linkage or buy a new linkage ( im sure i saw something about an uprated linkage for the g car?)

and give iot a damn good clean down.

hi simon, could you change your details of the car to inclued the year? and your location?

in 85 the brakes and various othe parts of the suspention changed as it would help in the future

i get most of my parts from sj sportscars if you click on the download brochure , you can get a list for the pre 87 esprit turbo. :)

the brake pads are not the easyest things to change on the rear, so when i did mine a month ago, i fitted the stainless hoses at the same time. The hand brake ajustment is inside the drivers side sill, the seat has to be moved all the way forward to gain access and even then its not easy, it is alot easyer to remove the seat out of the car(as long as the 4 bolts are not siezed :) )

REAR BRAKE PADS up to 1985 Up to 1985. SJ079J0001 SET 25.75 +pp

i would check your adjustment of the cables first though

ok thanks, is it worth checking the condition of the pads though anyway? i have always replaced pads etc when i bring a new car home, im just a bit wierd that way, i will be replacing every pipe and clip etc over the winter stripping and cleaning and going all for broke with her.

allways worth checking them, they are not easy to see. when i got to mine there was about 3mm left on them so i changed them. if you change them, you know they are done and its always a good thing to flush and replenish the fluid anyway - ended up using dot5.1 in the brakes and clutch systems.

Well as you have an '83 car you are in luck cos I am very familiar with that year. Before you touch a nut or a bult can I suggest that you buy both the workshop manual and the parts maunual for your car. The parts manual will be proberbly of more use than the workshop manual because it has exploded diagrams of just about everything on your car. I know I used my parts maunaul at least 80% of the time on my restoration.

If you want to know how to do anything on your car post here as you have already seen people are more than willing to help out.

Oh and if you make it to the factory visit you may even catch Dodgy (Dave) in his inspirational, genuine, almost timelss classic 80's suit. It is so good thy sprayed his car to match

The handbrake is supposed to be self-adjusting so you may need only to crawl under the car and operate the levers on the calipers a few times to take up slack. That's if the pads look OK.

If you do change the pads, you need to retract the pistons by rotating them 45 degress and pushing them back. Then rotate them back or a further 45 degrees to re-align them with the adjuster rachets.

Hi Simon.

If you've got the inboard brakes then I put a 'how to' on LEW under 'Rear brake replacement' - assuming you have the same setup!
