fan relay removed

well today i have done a fair bit to the car, removed the spark plugs and cleaned them up, they seem fine but i will replace them anyway, the dissy leads seemed far too long and wouldnt connect firmly to the plugs, so i trimmed them down for today ( i have a new set to pick up tuesday) and refitted them.

checked the coolant and that was nice and green, checked the oil and that was fine.

so started the car, no problems fired first time under choke with a touch of throttle (never had a car with choke before!) and left hewr idle, have found a gasket leak between the end of the manifold onto the turbo etc, so i will replace the lot this week, thats where the popping is coming from it seems its sucking and blowing air.

desperatly needs tuning and timing done so i have a krypton guy coming tuesday hopefully also.

i shorted the fan relay holders cnx over as suggested and the fans kicked in fine.

also where is the thermostat located as i want to replace that.

things dont look as bleak at the moment, but i have yet to do the compression test.

removed drivers seat to see how much room there will be with a skinny seat in there and its even better than i expected!!!! loads of room for me now.and the pedals feel even better now, moreso when i skew the arms slightly.

heres a piccy or two of the bad relay!

where do i get a replacement from and whats the number please guys.

thanks again for everyones help.

big si

ps: compounding her tonight and polishing so i will get a load of pics up as soon as shes finished.

Looks like something Ballard bought up from the Titianic :(

I think your car is pre-thermal trip so the relay is a fused one Lotus pn. A079M6101F

A double contact relay would work, but your fans would not be fuse protected :(

The thermostat housing is on the front of the engine (part of the top of the water pump casting)

Dont forget to buy yourself a telescoping mirror so you can see all this hidden stuff! :(

on the pipe that the coolant tank is attatched to in the rear it heads towards the front of the car in that is screwed what i thought was a temp sensor, am i right? next to it looks like an earth screwed to the pipe also

Thats where the "Otter switch" is on my car (sensor to turn the fans on and off) :(

Yours looks nothing like mine! :(

If that wires Blue and Green (hard to see the blue) its your temp sensor.

Simon yes one is the temp sender and one is an earth as you say i think mine are the other way around but you look like you called them right.

On the thermostat note I dont know when they went to the remote thermostat.

If yours has a remote one then it is located at the bottom of that pipe with the temp sender in and is a black housing with two inlets on the top and one on the bottom.

Thats your rad fan thermal trip.

So my previous assumption your car didnt have it was incorrect.

The suitable relay is Lotus pn. A082M6182F which is a double contact unfused relay. (same relay as your headlamp high beam if you want to swap it to test)

ok, as per waynes suggestion in one of our conversations i removed the main beam realy and placed it into the fan realy holder. the fans came on and stayed on, all the time, never went off!!

i then took her out for a drive and a couple of times opened her up, the temp went to about 90 max and never went higher.

however the fans stayed on constantly they never turned off, i had to pull the relay again to make then shut down. the otter swith on the lft of the bonnet with the red tip, i pressed that as im sure its a reset of some kind?? and that didnt even stop them.

the fan fail light doesnt come on, so i need to check that bulb and connection.

i realy do think now that the manifold may be cracked as the sound is from that side moreso than the turbo side that i fixed yesterday.

i also have to get the 4 wheel alignment sorted as the front seems to skip when i turn the wheel whilst moving from stationary, that or im not used to non power steering yet!

so there may yet be light at the end of the tunnel, who knows.

Well that is promising news!!

Your engine should run at 90 deg C, although this may not be 90 on your gauge.

Mine generally runs bellow 90 on the gauge but creeps up to 90 then the fans cut in.

Phone up lotus technical and ask them about the relay if they still stock them if not they will tell you what it is and you should be able to source a realy to work.

Simon, find your Otter switch (not the fan thermal trip) (location as per diagram I posted) and pull the wires from it.

If your fans shut down , thats the problem.

If they dont, you may have accidently used a changeover relay and not one of the double contact ones from the headlamp high beam circuit as I suggested!

wayne i used the relay you stated as when i tried the main beam switch the light pods didnt even raise up. and that was the only one with the blue-colours wires.

i can see what you mean by the otter switch i will check tomorrow.

si

ps: drove her again today... god she doesn't half make me smile.

Hi Simon

Seems like your thundering through these little jobs on your car, puts me to shame!!!

With that relay, I'm sure a little WD40 would clean it up a treat!!! :(

My fans wenrt working and it was down to the otter switch under the drivers wheel arch, the connections had corroded very badly, maybe someone has shorted the wires at this point to get them working perminently... Worth checking.

ok looked at the underneath of the car today finally!! got it up on my mates 4 poster, didnt have too long as he had 5 cars to sort out. but..

the otter switch looked fine, i then pulled the wires off to see if the fans would cut out but they didnt, so its that realy im using thats the problem by the seems of it. i did pull the cnx off the middle fan and then put back on as it wasnt owrking, i then reset the red button in the bonnet and it came back on, the drivers side fan however was working till i messed with it, so i will take it off and refurb it this week.

the blowing and popping is down to all the gaskets being baddy fitted and worn. lots of air being sucked in and blown out.

i will start a new thread shortly with pics to show todays events!!

heres my otter switch in all its glory, all wired ok it seems ...... unless the wires are the wrong way round!!
