Backmarker
I've been viewing some digital photographs saved on my hard drive.(Esprits not porn, honest) I noticed that some (and I don't know why ) are saved as TIFF files rather than JPEG. I'd like to know why this has happened (Noddy's guide please) and how can I change the format from TIFF to JPEG (again, words of one syllable please, you're dealing with a techno-thickie here ) Hope someone knows the answers. Graham. Jonathan
Camera has been set to RAW or something similar TIFF is a 'loss less' file format. You need to go back and set the camera up so it takes JPEGs Yes you can convert them (technically thats what the camera would do - it takes pics in raw format then compresses them into JPGs) not sure what software you have but photoshop / paintshop etc can do it. If you're not to desperate to convert them I will bring the Lotup to Hethel in october and you can convert them there if you likes. Cliff
I agree with Jonathan that if they are direct camera transfers, the the camera was not set to save them as jpeg. The same would hole true of they are scanned images as many scanners save at 'tiff' as their default. The software that came with your camera should have a way to convert them from tiff to jpeg. Or, Adboe Photoshop or Ellements (cheaper for home users) should work. If you have many, make sure that you try to find the 'batch' conversion as manually converting can take some time if there are many.
Bibs
Use http://www.irfanview.com to convert them, it's a great piece of free software for image manipulation/conversion. Backmarker
Gentlemen, Thank you. If I understand you all correctly, I'd better get the camera guide out and find which buttons to press to make sure it now saves 'em as JPEG. After that, I'll start the conversion. There's about 6 that have been saved as TIFF's. Thanks for your help chaps. Cheers, Graham. sephyr
I recommend GIMP for all picture manipulation, it's supposed to be the best free picture manipulation tool Very similar to Adobe Photoshop. http://www.gimp.org for the official homepage, http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html for the windows installer. Remember to first install GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment, which is downloaded from the same site.
Backmarker
Thanks guys. I've checked the camera. It appears that I've selected "HI" when in manual mode. This automatically saves as a TIFF file. On autofocus it defaults to "FINE" where it saves as a JPEG. Now to see if I can convert TIFF to JPEG on my PC. Graham.
