Headlights MOT

Recommended Posts

Another MOT question, checking lights and noticed rusty main beam unit, the reflective cone is red rust rather than a shiny mirror, I assume this will fail MOT, the other 3 have very small signs of rust also but I think they will be ok any thoughts

I am in the same situation so have been making new brackets so I can fit standard items. From what I have read I think you will be ok as long as the beam isnt being too affected????

This one's an art rather than a science in practice.  The beam is measured for dipped, and if the pattern is good then it's a pass.  For main, the check really is that they work, however if lots of rust is visible then it can fail regardless.

Likely to fail the MOT without question. I bit the bullet and purchased a relacement kit of all four

lights and alloy back plate - SJs from memory.

Tried to remove the black headlight surrounds, 4 screws had to be drilled out, covers intact, but all adjusters rusted badly, also the near side pod has more movement than the offside pod, so i think i need to remove the backing plates to,get to the hinge pins, if so i assume i will need backing plates, dip plastic rings adjusters etc etc etc, PNM do a lovely headlight stainless kit for £330 inc VAT has anyone fitted this, if so did it go well and are the lights brighter

It must have been the kit from PNM which I fitted. Very nice and no problems fitting. I used higher intensity bulbs and they work well.

Just make sure you keep the pod clean and you shouldnt experience any other problems.

Ordered the headlight kit from PNM, also LED rear number plate light assemblys, and a relay that will illuminate all 4 headlights on full beam, then fingers crossed ready for MOT

....and a relay that will illuminate all 4 headlights on full beam,

Are not the inner 2 for full beam any way? Reason I ask is trial fitting my headlamps I made tonight and the outer 2 work as dipped and main beam but I have no light from the inner two? When should they come on? The two side lights in the bumper work ok as well???

Just looking in the service manual and I didnt have the ignition turned on. Would this have this effect?

I did mine using PNM parts in stainless, the was nt cheap but worth it, never had a problem since. The only issue for me was the cost f the Small locking posts, they were horrendous, made me cry. I am sure they are a standard item, the od mini used them.

I'm sure a number of people on here have fitted far cheaper replacement light units. Surely it can't cost that much to have new backing plates made? SJ do cheaper ones in steel, £14.00, outer carrier plate £7.00 a good coat of metal paint will protect them. Some of the so called specialist do seem to make prices up as they go along. The side indicator lenses are £15, there a £5 from a tractor supplier.
