Anyone else's windscreen cracked whilst sat for no apparent reason?

I was in the middle of a marathon detailing session today and had Snow foamed, dried and clay bared car and screen was fine. Go in for a quick etherkit before I start the polish to come out and notice the screen cracking. Started right at the bootom of the screen in an almost straight line about 3/4 of the screen. I actually saw it moving up the screen slowly. Very strange, no sign of a chip anywhere along its path.

I was very hot today (23 if the car is to beleived) so it was either the heat or my huge dump that sent shock waves?

Is it just me who's a Jonah or anyone else had similar issues with the windscreen cracking for no apparent reason?

Funny things, windscreens. I wouldn't call 23 hot though. My dad and I were working on my Ducati in Gove (38 degrees C) when we heard this bang. Nothing had fallen from anywhere and we were all stumped as to what it was until I saw the right hand panel of the Landrover windscreen cracked from top to bottom.

Not a slow crack like yours admittedly, but just a random breakage.

I think it's just unlucky. Stress with the way the car is parked, heat in a certain spot etc etc etc.

Many years ago I parked up my S1 outside a shop after a 30 min drive to get there. Returning to the car it had just started to rain and as I was about put the key in the door lock the entire HRW  shattered into thousands of small pieces and fell into the boot/luggage space

No I wouldn't call 23 hot either TBH. Thanks for replies, not just me then!

Told it's not that uncommon upon speaking to Autoglass. The crack is directly below where the wiper sits so I suspect it was a combination of washing with warm water, sun and pressure on that particular area which was also a weak spot causing it.

Windscreen excess is only £75 so not end of world and its drivable as on passenger side.

Only place my insurers approve are Autoglass and they called and said they would have to order direct from the factory on Monday and ask them for instructions.

I will insist they order and fit new rubbers at the same time as had a nightmare a few years back with a leak on another car that turned out to be a damaged seal after the windscreen was replaced.

The only place my insurer say they'll let me use (without a massive excess) is National Windscreens, however I found that the local branch of SilverShield had guys who used to work for Lotus and the boss knows Brian Angus, they did a replacement for me and the excess was the same as if I'd used NW.

No not at all, said we can't send someone out you will have to bring it in.

Said fine but I will be staying with it and will remove the side trims prior to arrival.

He promised they'd be careful, I certainly hope so!!

Cheers Andy Clements will have a ring around on Monday and see what others say locally.

When the windscreen cracked on my Elan I got a Lotus dealer (B&C) to write a letter to my insurers stating the screen replacement needed to be supervised by a Lotus specialist. Autoglass did it with a technician from B&C in attendance.

On the Elan there was a need to ease some of the body panels to make fitting the screen easier. Not sure if that's necessary on the Evora.

To get back to the original question I had my 2nd Evoras' windscreen crack from the near side and it started under the A pillar trim half way down and went accross the window a few inches.  Like you there were no stone chips and it radiated from under the trim. It was replaced by dealer under warranty because no stone chips.  It took some time to come in but that didn't matter with me working offshore as car left with dealer for 4 weeks.

Remember it is fully bonded so not sure what rubbers you refer to although there is the exterior ones particularly including the top corners which I have had fail a couple of times once on each first 2 cars.  I would also be surprised if you can re-use the A pillar trims.  I have had about 4 sets of them over 3 cars in last 3 1/2 years. They are only stuck on and tend to be use once job or you will loose at high speed.

Had a chat with the Autoglass chap today. They had been onto the factory and discussed and ordered all the bits. Turns out its much easier than the Élan or Elise. No fettling of panels or loosening of the front clam (assuming wire used to remove screen) and the chaps that will be fitting it had been given a step by step guide (they have done a few Elise's but no Evora).

The rubbers are top and bottom strips and he has ordered some of the required side trim tape and a pillars in case they need some (they can get damaged upon removal).

Anyone whose interested in what's involved and the bits you need to order see below link

Had windscreen replaced at Autoglass taunton.

Really nice guy who did it, took his time. It took about 3 hours in total.

Said it was much easier than an Elise he's done.

Only issue was when they took off the side trims got a small split in the passenger side window seal. They are ordering another other than that great job (will confirm once I've washed it to confirm it doesn't leak)!
