Engine speed signal missing...encore

After getting my 90 se back from garage for new belts etc. I noticed my CEL with an intermittent code 41 for first time since owing her.  Cleaned all connections on DI module,checked wiring to the ECM and checked voltage at ecm terminal ( 4.95 v) but still get the code. Apparently the mechanic accidently spilled coolant on the DI module/coils. Could this mean a new DI module/coils?

Did you clean behind the coil packs?

 

They bolt onto the base plate and have some thin electrical blade connectors in the back, that could have gotten the liquid on them...

Thanks for the suggestion, Travis. They didn't look affected but yes, I cleaned those blade connectors with some fine sandpaper but still got cel.

Check the fly wheel sensor as well?

I checked the schematics on the sensor and it doesnt seem to be part of the circuit.

However, I did try to remove it and it seems to be stuck. Is it anchored in or just pull until it releases?

One bolt, and it should come out easy.  The housing is plastic so don't force it.  may have some corrosion holding it in.

Yes. Just a little stuck but removed finally. There was a little soot so cleaned and replaced but still getting code 41.

   Marc, I had the same problem two years ago, and the solution was, as Travis wrote, the flywhell sensor; the internal Cu circuit and magnet are a limited life.

The new sensor didn't do the trick, still coding 41. During the process of reinstalling the old sensor I accidently dropped the 10 mm bolt and washer into the crank case. Cant seem to find the parts even with a scope. I would like to avoid taking crank case apart Is there enough clearance for the flywheel to clear any debris at bottom of casing?

Do not leave them in the bell housing to bounce around and damage something. At high rpm the bolt could possibly be thrown through the side of the casing.

Attach a neodymium magnet (25 mm diameter by 8 mm thick will work) to the side of the clutch cover and rotate the flywheel 360 degrees and hopefully it will ‘collect’ the bolt and washer on its way around.

Eureka! My Snap-on scope with magnet end did the trick. I was able to find those pesky parts and extract them. Now that I have the boot removed time to do some repairs to all those broken hoses that were hidden.

Poised to buy a new DI module from JAE as I have not found fault with connections, wiring and a new crank sensor to boot. Anyone have any other suggestions before I drop $$$ ?
