New V8 Radiator & scary finding!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

One of the problems with my new car when I bought it was that it tended to run a little hot between 95 to 100. Anyway I have been over at PNM having one of there improved Rads fitted to the beastie. Took all day on friday and part of saturday (I was having a service and a few other jobs done too), Anyway am really pleased. It's a larger rad core and the drive home was ace. Temperature didn't move from between 85 to 90 the whole way. Excellent!! Big thanks to Pete at PNM and to Dave Walters for assistance.

One thing that was scary though was I'd asked Pete to look at a clunking noise problem. I'd assumed itwas the body bolts as what I've read seemed to agree that diagnosis. However when the car was in the air it transpired that the garage who had put the gearbox back in the car (somewhere down south the PO had used) had failed to tighten the rear suspension properly. The top link nuts were almost off!!!!!! Fortunately nothing has been damaged and after Pete tightened everything up all was well. I gave it a test as I was leaving and apart from a bit of tyre smoke (hehehe) no clunking noise. The garage who did the original work I don't think was a Lotus specialist but it just goes to show what can happen!!

Just thankful that Pete found it tbh.

Got nearly all the jobs I wanted done and have come home with a few parts to continue the modification process!! :o

All in all a great couple of days and a top outcome. I'm really looking forward to getting to know the car now as I had been loathe to drive it much with it being so hot. Lot's of V-Power petrol to chew through.

Big thanks again

Cheers

So that's why you didn't get to Oulton today.

Glad to hear you now have a safe car. Had it had an MOT after the work had been carried out - you'd expect this to be picked up. What was the problem with the gearbox?

Lets have an update on the Avatar with the new car.

Usually when my car is running faster than 35 miles per hour my Temp reads around 90C or lower. It only goes up into the low 100C when I

LOL so you need to be a Lotus Specialist to tighten nuts up on an Esprit ?!

Never ceases to amaze me what happens at garages, what nuts were thay on the top link ?

They should all by nylocks so they don't shake off - other than that there is the adjuster lock nuts for the camber setting, but they usually rust in place....might be worth getting the camber checked if PNM didn't already do it.

Hiya,

Have to take some pics now to do a new avatar.

The PO had the gearbox removed and rebuilt as it had lost a tooth off the crown wheel. The rebuild was done at voights in liverpool oddly enough and they seem to have done a great job (I have the receipt for that part too). The problem was with the garage who put it back in the car I think. It did have th correct nyloc nuts on which is probably why it the top links just didn't fall off when I was driving. In fairness Pete has double checked everything else that the other garage might have touched and made sure they are all tight enough. It's unbelievable how they could have missed it in the first place though.

Yep that is the reason we weren't at Oulton. We had a few other jobs to finish on it and also had something to check on Dave's car.

cheers
