why do people do them? Vocations.

My wife's a nurse and people say it's a vocation rather than job and, let's face it, why would you study and do a 3 year degree do all the free placements and at the end of it earn just over 20k, do 14 hour days full of poo and vomit, heavy lifting, abuse and, sometimes being assaulted. I have nothing but respect for medical staff, including Paramedics who earn about the same and put up with even more abuse.

I would be interested to hear everyone's views on jobs they wouldn't or couldn't do or jobs you think people are crazy to do and why?

This is a genuine topic, we all hate policians and bankers so lets ignore them! :-)

Cheers mate :getmecoat:

Some people are what's described as a "people person" and love being with others, helping others etc, some people are more like me, best kept out of the way (think Egor in various movies) doing things behind the scenes. I certainly wouldn't choose to do the former type of role, but it would probably be preferable to me than one that's more attention based.

Why does Wendy do it, sounds like a shit job?! :P

I'd imagine the positives outweigh the negatives, I'm sure there are plenty of them.

What is it you do for the bank Clemo, I think I've got an idea...?

he takes them apart

always think of a vocation being religous but seems to be any job people do because they love it rather than for the money

hindsight: the science that is never wrong

If the people had it their minds would become corrupted and full of impure thoughts - a bit like mine.

So, nursing. Yep it's definitely a vocational career path. It's certainly not for the money or the working environment. Mind you, in Wendy's case, she has the bonus of her work hours meaning she doesn't have to spend too long with Tony at any one time. That's got to be worth being shat on or covered in sick every shift, surely?

Pffft! I can do that for her if she wants! Just gimme a bottle of whiskey and Voila!

Haha. She does it because she cares. That's about the long and short of it. Sure all Nurses and Healthcare professionals moan and grumble about it but those that aren't in it because they want to make a difference soon leave.

Another one I don't understand is what you mention above. Priests/Vicars etc. Their pay is really rubbish, though they do tend to get accommodation for free. And if you are a priest you have the added bonus of being celebate!

Sorry Andy. I exclude you from the Bankers thing :)

Cheers Tony :vava:

Not all Bankers are greedy money grabbers. I feel sorry for those at RBS that were told by Cameron that they couldn't receive any bonuses as it was a state owned company.

Bazza, I did say that to head off any "off topic" comments. I am one who agree's that people should be paid a decent bonus based on their profitability and worth to the company. Any company!

I get paid on results. I have a good basic but much of my money is made up on commission, so fully support that system. It focus's the mind on what ever targets the company sets.

I don't hate Bankers, I think there are a few at the top who are over paid. I don't like politicians though! :)

I couldn't be a doctor, surgeon or nurse but thank heavens there are people out there who can.

The lows must be pretty low but I guess you experience doing something that seems meaningful every single day. I imagine there's a sense of making a huge difference to people at the time when they need help the most. Presumably most people and their families make it very clear how grateful they are when they get out of hospital too.

Lots of jobs can feel a bit pointless and meaningless (most days in marketing!), in some cases you're paid to be a downright nuiscance to people (most days in marketing again!). I imagine most nurses would find it a lot harder to get up in the morning for a telesales job or put on a traffic warden's outfit.

Sorry to air the "P" word but I would love to hear a politician in power say :-

"I had a calling,  a vocation to make this country a better place by (insert cause here) , I have come so far, I really really wanted to achieve (whatever it is).

It has now transpired that I cannot realistically hope to achieve (whatever it is) that will improve peoples` lives....

Therefore, that`s it. I QUIT!"

So why does the church need so much money?

The church I attend has an income of circa £250k pa this includes donations/fund raising/ income from hire of hall etc.

£125k goes on the Parish Share, this is money distributed to churchs in the diocese with small/poor congregations that are unable to generate sufficient income of their own. £20k goes to other charities £20k on insurance/accountancy. £20k on salaries. £20k on church hall repairs/ utility bills. £25k on church repairs/ utilities. £5k on music/choir /youth work...etc etc

I started out as a nurse and to be honest I loved it - I was bloody good too! In fact my wife worked with a surgeon who had worked with me 15 years before and when he knew who she was married to said I was still the best cardiac scrub nurse he'd ever worked with.

I went into management, hated it so went into medical sales. I've specialised in cardiology and cardiac surgery and the roles I've had have been very clinical, I currently teach cardiologists and cardiac surgeons how to repair the mitral valve percutaneously and then stand beside them during the case and advise them. My basic is four times what I'd earn as a nurse and in good years I earn more than my customers.

I find it sad however that many consultants are now leaving their jobs to work in the same role as myself as they can earn more.

It's also a reflection of healthcare that when I left my post I was replaced by five managers, absolutely crazy!
