Short shift for an '89 gearbox

Recommended Posts

I have a friend in Japan asking if an '89 SE Turbo can be converted to short-shift, like the '93 onwards cars. It looks as if this can be achieved by fitting the translator body from a '93 or later car that has revised geometry. Has anybody else attempted such an alteration? Does it work OK if you retain the origional LHS cross shaft exit from the gearbox and origional cables (the later cars of course had shorter cables and RH exit cross shafts)? I would imagine the shift effort goes up alot.

If this does not work well then I would imagine its a matter of fitting the later rear cover assy to the grearbox, later silencer cradle, shift cables and translator. All rather expensive! Are there any other options to achieve 'short shift'?

Finaly, any body got any of the parts required for sale?

This is not available as a kit.

The difference is that the S4 (& 93 onward Esprit) has a different 'Master unit'. It might

be possible to fit one of these but I could not be certain.

the cost of this Master unit is approx GBP400

has anyone tried to fit this Master unit into Pre93 Esprit??

A wonderfully simple idea that is so logical I am kicking myself for not thinking of it before I asked! I guess this reduces fore/aft travel of the gearstick, but not side to side (not that this is the problem here). How about effort increase? Did you experience any significant increase in the effort required?

Many thanks for a great suggestion!

I did like it much better this way.May be its a litle more effort, nothing much.

And the nice thing is that its the same space sidways so its less chance for a miss gear from 2nd -3rd...

A simple solutions that works great :D
