Hi all - I have finally started repairing my V8, although I have had to resign myself to paying a garage to do it (Stratton Motor Company).

The engine and gearbox are both now out and there is apparently play in the 1st motion shaft. I have agreed with SMC that I will arrange for the gearbox repair to be done as this is not something they would normally do themselves.

So, a simple question really - any recommendations for any companies I should talk to?

Also, the clutch will need replacing at the same time, am I right in thinking that modifying the gearbox output shaft at the same time to a larger diameter (Ford?) one will enable me to use a clutch sourced direct from AP? Probably clutching at straws here but if so maybe I could offset some of the cost of the gearbox repair by not having to pay the Lotus price for the clutch...... which is pretty steep it has to be said..........

And finally - any other worthwhile mods to the gearbox while I am at it?

Any input gratefully received

Thanks and regards

Jerry

And Jerry..

If you need to do the clutch at the same time I can give you the details of a company that supplies all our AP Racing clutches. Warn you though the clutch assemblies are expensive but expect you already knew that !

PM me if you need the contact

I got mine done by HR Clutch. They upgraded it to a sintered copper and Kevlar mix for less than 1/4 of te price of a new one. As I recall it was about $600.

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

  • 2 weeks later...

the AP-discs (Renault spline) alone are not so much money  ..I have got a new set from Steve @ SJ-sportscars some time ago for around 150€ per clutch disc.   ..you can even 'refurbish' your old disc set with new material put on

But if you opt for a bigger 'aftermarket' field with different material combinations, and different manufacturers available who fit into the AP-cage the FORD option still looks like a way to go.

@Mark T-C:    ..this one you show, this is the Renault type shaft profile -right ?

I still would be interested to get all the exact dimensions (drawing details) of a FORD type shaft. [with the differences on spline type/ tooth shape]

As those details on the input shaft are still a point of interest to make a decision.

Yup. The clutch and pressure plate were factory items that were reconditioned to the clutch you see in the pictures.
