Lightweight battery

I'm new to the forums (just purchased a 2001 Esprit) and I was wondering if anyone uses a light weight battery. In my old car, that was a very popular mod as the stock battery weighed roughly 65 Lbs and the lightweight battery weighed in around 14-16 Lbs depending on which one you went with. Any help would be appreciated.

Garage:

2001 Lotus Esprit V8

2003 Kawasaki ZX6RR

1994 Toyota 4Runner

Wish list:

MV Agusta F4-1000 Tamburini

I use a Hawker Odyssey PC625 for my '85 4cyl Esprit. It weighs only 12.6lbs and, so far, it cranks my 9.25:1 compression engine as low as 22 degrees F. You would require a bit more I suspect, but check out the other Hawker Odyssey batteries. Losing weight in these cars is a win-win situation!! Best of luck. Lee

Thanks for the info. This was a big thing on the M3 forums (previous car) and one thing they did was switch out the stock heavy battery for a lightweight battery. It ended up saving 30+ lbs.

I used the Odyssey for years in my M3 street car. It was FANTASTIC, it actually has more cranking amps for the first 6 seconds than "bigger" batteries, it just cannot deal as well with long term draws. LED buls would be a great upgrade with the battery upgrade to keep draw as low as possible when car is off. I ended up saving about 35lbs by going with the light weight battery. WELL worth it. You will need a battery box though

People say that those 12lb lightweight batteries are not good for daily driving. infact that is opposite to the truth. Those are the BEST for daily drivers. The only time the super lightweight batteries run into issues is when you leave the car sitting for a week at a time. If you only drive the car once a week then its not the best battery for you. I had the Odyssey super lightweight battery (Plus battery box from bimmerhaus) and used it for 2 years daily. never ANY issues when driven daily. Only time i ran into issues was when i slapped it into my track car and the track car would sit for long periods of time. So again as he said, don't hesitate, get rid of that weight! :)

From what I understand, the Hawker Odyssey batteries are engineered to provide both starting and deep cycle funtion. I have had a very good experience w/ mine. I agree the only time there is a problem, is when it sits for a while. Fortunately they are built to withstand deep cycling w/o hurting their performance. Most batteries are permanently degraded after being discharged only one time!!!!

Another remarkable benefit is that these batteries are a sealed lead acid AGM type. This means they can be mounted in virtualy any configuration, On their sides or upright. They also fit in such tight spaces they could be mounted inside the cockpit behind the seats or wherever.

Oh yeah, and they won't spill acid!!!!!

Exactly Lee, well said. Mine drained down maybe 15-20 times and it always came back like new with no problems. Thats the advantage of these dry cell batteries. anyways i highly recommend it!
