Nano ceramic coating to paintwork

Recommended Posts

Right, as you all undoubtedly know, I'm rather excited to own the world's only (allegedly, according to Brandon at Murray Lotus in Edinburgh) matt[e] black Evora S.

Well, having had a chat with a local überexpert (allegedly, once again) who has washed and sprayed and foamed and lovingly cared for it to make it back to gorgeous after a lot of muddy/wet road driving, I should apparently pay him 500 smackeroonies to get a "nano ceramic coating" applied to the paintwork that "will give 2 years of protection" and make water and bird poo and all manner of other things (chavs, possibly) just fall off the car if they touch it.

Has anyone had this done or heard of it, and would you recommend it? I have to leave the car with the chap for 2-3 days as the coating needs to be done indoors and stay indoors away from the elements for 24 hours minimum. Obviously with the keys. Am I being a complete mug? My insurer assures me that if it goes mysteriously missing, it will obviously be theft, even if I've more than willingly given the chap the keys. But they still want proof that the work is being done. Sensible.

But now I'm paranoid. And concerned. My sexy little fat arsed baby is going to be away for a few nights, and who knows where it may end up. <gulp>

Is it worth the stress?

Sexy!    You know Dexter is the name of a serial killer too, right?

That muse had been very satisfying to see that what you have spent £££ actually is returning the results you were promised. Nice, like a bit of beading!

What is the product he's using? I'll ask my pal who runs Supercar Detailing if it's any good. :)

He did show me the bottle but cleverly I didn't note much about it. Except it was small and apparently £120 for about a thimble-full.

Having done some Googling in an attempt to redeem myself, I have a feeling it's CQuartz as in this video:

I think my question may be more geared towards "Am I being a dickhead leaving my Evora and its keys with some bloke I don't know?".

What was the name of the paint specialist that used to post on here a fair while ago? Anyone remember?

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

I'm pleased to report that Dexter (that's the Evora S, for those at the back not keeping up) is back after his week-long trip to car paintwork hospital to have his special coating. He's had a few other bits of cosmetic surgery to keep him looking young and sexy inside and out, and to fix some minor "issues" with faded plastic etc.

Yep, this was the work of The Ultimate Shine - bizarrely, given the mattness of the whole affair. Awesomatious job.

Not at the mo, that's my lot. I need to find somewhere suitable as a backdrop when the weather is glorious - I dare say next weekend's Rest and Be Thankful jaunt may herald some, weather permitting.

I'm going out for a blast of a few hours in him in a mo. Not sure where we'll end up... weather looks better south and east north and west a bit - edited as the BBC changed its mind.

I may just drive and get lost and use Deb to get me home (Bibs, that's Dexter's sat nav - *obviously*)

Eventually I decided on south and east and made a break for the border. As I always try to refrain from straying too far into England unless absolutely necessary I then turned around and shortly after made a heading for Peebles.

I did a Dexter-soft-porn shoot in an off-road suitably rugged locked up metal gates kinda place. But I dunno where to post those pictures for general consumption and admiration by the Lotus adoring masses - well, it *is* the only matt black Evora S in the whole wide wide world (dunno if I've said that already).

But here's a border shot that my iPhone made "noir" and moody to be getting on with. The others are all colour!

It's a Starlight Black Evora that they painted with clear Plastidip.  they also sprayed the wheels with Plastidip.

Interesting technique.. No I hadn't seen that car. I'd read about similar things I think when I was researching the whole matt thing with vinyl vs paint. I'd love to see that car in real-life and side-by-side with mine to see it properly and compare the differences of the finishes. Thanks for the link.

Well today was a wonderful day in Fife if you love rain and murk. But it did provide me with some excitement as I could see precisely how the paint now dealt with water. And this is it. Perhaps the same as a regular highly polished paint would... but very much not how the matt paint reacted before the coating.
