unidentified vac pipe ?

Recommended Posts

hey guys can anyone give us a clue about the vac pipe in the pic.its in the drivers side  near the fuel pump and comes from the vac pump area ithink.i cant remember disconnecting this and spotted it whilst doing my refurb.I cannot see anywhere that it connects to at all.it is a fairly large bore pipe as well, as far as vac pipe goes and produces a good vacuum as well as a chuff chuff whilst the engine is running(not a goosing).thanks all, steve

That goes down to a tee below the engine, where it connects to the vacuum pump line to the brake booster.  That line goes to a tee in the area where the photo was taken, that tee goes to the rear relay panel to provide vacuum to the throttle jack and the EBPV.  The other branch of the tee is a small line that goes to the heater control panel below the stereo.  The vacuum there operates the heater control flaps.

Which year Esprit do you have?  Do you have ABS?  The ABS car's don't use the vacuum for the brakes.

I recently learned that the vacuum pipe in your hand is GLUED to the tee it connects to. (As Travis said, the tee lives towards the rear of the car.)

Mine came loose after service as well, and it had a lot less stress on it when I ran it UNDER the intake "dryer hose" in the photo. Plus, I put a thin smear of RTV on it, which 1. makes it easier to slide on and 2. helps prevent it from pulling loose, again.

thanks guys.its a 1989,no abs version and iv a suspicion that's its been disconnected for some time as iv had the chuffing noise since I bought the car but just put it down to the noise that a new vac pump was making.i shall look again to see if I can find the tee and will also bond it as well I think.worth noting that the heater system has always been crap as well with probs operating the flaps etc despite numerous attempts by me to rectify it and this is probably a problem inherited with the car.but as you live you learn I suppose.thanks very much for your help.cheers(till the next prob !) steve
