Hi Don, the pipe ends clamped in the metal bracket shown in your picture, it should have a plastic moulded end in it, I have one which I no longer need. Message me your email and I'll send you a photo of the part

Regards Dan

  • 4 months later...

I have now a 85mm inner diameter tube mounted. This will fit over the first step of the stock air box. For a complete cover it should be 87-90.

I have now to sort out the end of the tube. The stock layout makes the diameter smaller... I want to avoid this... But this will be a challenge... Well, where not on this car? :D

That said, i have now a tube remounted like that and could not notice a total different engine behaviour. But I hope it will suit the engine and she loves her driver even more  :D and I think, I feel, I might feel... she revs a bit better and higher up.

I have now the experience, that the car starts really bad when hot. Just before, it needed only one little impulse and the engine was engaged.

Do others have similar experiences that starting when hot is easier without the complete tube or only with the filter housing?

Interesting you should say that Don. I finally fitted the air filter, box and induction tube yesterday - and now the car won't start. I was beaten by lack of light last night but I suspect that all that extra in front of the carbs has impeded the airflow so much that the engine has flooded. So I'll need to reset the carbs again. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Regular restorer. Rather less reliable forum poster!

can confirm it... I have tested it twice... with the tube on the car wont start if the engine is up to temperature :( I have now taken the tube out of the bay again and: rroooaaaammmm on the very first key turn :)

So my carbs are heavily out of balance. But I dont want to mess with the carbs around as they are good in every different aspect. So  I will change the direction and will try some shiny K&Ns :smoke:

Interesting.  And that will also mean that when I'm setting timing with the air box off in the next week or two the car will be running quite lean and not as well as it should.

Let us know how you get on with the K&Ns.  I'm sure they'll help the engine breathe better, but my concern would be that it would be drawing mainly hot air into the engine, resulting in a decrease in power.  And there are not many places from where to duct the air up into the carb area.

Dave: I have no experiences with setting carbs. I could only state, that I am very confident with the power delivery by now although I dont know, if it could be better.

I could notice no advantage with the tube on. Only a guessed smoother noise instead the more "roar" without. I definetely also dont know if the engine is now healthier or not.... So please take care  of this note.

I have only all the bills of the work done of Lotus and carb specialists on this car (with the tube already off). But we all know, there are not only really specialists around us or if the specialist himself has done the work or his nephew... So I hope, there is everything fine on it.

I will do learn more about carbs, but this will be later. So I dont change the Setup and try to improve the blingbling and the handling because the airxbox without the tube doesnt make sense to me at all.

I will report later on if things get improved or worse
