Esprit Owners, how practical is an Esprit (Peter Stevens era)?

I know it is not the most important thing about a Lotus but I'm intrigued to know whether the Esprit is a better partner for weekend away compared to an Elise.

Thanks

Done camping in Le Mans 3 times in my Esprit, plenty of room. Orders of magnitude over an Elise before you need to get creative with the space.

Cool Compartment.... Hot/warm compartment.

The boot is quite big for a sport mid engine car. You dont have space like that in a f355 for instance.

You can go in long weekend at 2 no problem... even the full holidays if your girlfriend/wife doesn't bring 50 pairs of shoes.

By the way, talking boot, does anyone already lanage to put the roof in the boot of a V8? Seems possible, but i can't find the right process to lake it happen

It's possible! You put the roof in with the "long side" pointing towards the front of the car, then you rotate it carefully by 90 degrees ensuring you use the space under the rear corners of the boot. It's described in the owners handbook!

As for luggage space.....well I'll let this speak for itself:

I'm not sure that I would be happy putting my glass roof in the boot - I think I will keep it on the roof

This book is guaranteed to NOT change your life…but it does mention a Lotus Esprit...

When I bought my SE, I had two medium bag packs, 4 L og engine oil, 3 L of engine coolant, a big Tool roll, two jackets, camera gear, lot's of spares like door handles, airfilters, blinkers, ignition cables, and much more, a big red LEF indoor cover, a large outdoor cover, all workshop manuals and parts list, winddeflector and roofbag, toolset from factory, and stil Space to boot ;) In the front I had nothing, but original equipment I did not have anything inside the car,  than a pair of Shades and the original instructionsmanual and a bottle of Water and my wife ;)

I will state though, that I really dislike bringing luggage. I tend to drive with very Little or nothing. In my Humble view, there's more than enough Space for 3 weeks for me and my wife.

Cheers,

Jacques.

Well, its a very good exercise forcing the other half to pack light. Also, it reduces the shopping potential of any trip.

So, not only practical, frugal too! Dont say that about an Esprit too often!!

Went twice for week-long car trips around Europe with significant other, everything we needed fit comfortably in the Esprit...

Dunno what's the matter with you lot. Try travelling around Europe with two people in a Cobra, two-man tent, with no wet weather gear, just a tonneau cover. You open the door to let the water out, when it gets up to the sills. I've even slept under the tonneau cover in a Paris service station.

(Actually, I wouldn't do that any more, I'm more of your 5-star hotel bloke these days, cos I'm an old fart now.)

Just to add to the chorus, plenty of space! Especially without the spare wheel, usually I only need use the front boot to take everything I need. I regularly take mine to the supermarket, a full trolly including up to 3 crates of 'beverage' is no problem. Only downside is the heat that gets to your groceries. I hope this will get better when I refit the rear floor with a heat shield and replace the seal between engine and tailgate.
Definitely not a problem taking an Esprit for few weeks of holiday.

Quite different from a trip to Russia in the Range Rover I did a few years ago. I carried tools and spareparts/fluids for 3 cars on a 5000km trip, including around 1000km offroad, food and water for 2 people/10 days, clothes, sleeping and camping gear, with a fixed 200l LPG tank already fixed in the boot and just enough room to spare on top to sleep 2 people in some comfort and without having to bother with a tent. Just shows, the more space you have available, the more you'll stuff into it.

Filip

I have made many mistakes in my life. Buying a multiple Lotus is not one of them.

If you put the missus in the boot it frees up the entire passenger side for any necessary provisions. :)

Caution, clearing border control can be an issue if you use this technique.

Nope, because if you put the wife in the boot, and the booze in the passengers seat, the border control will automatically take posession of the bottle, and wink you onwards ;)

Cheers,

Jacques.
