Exhaust Crackle

Recommended Posts

Any ideas on how to get the crackle sound out of the exhaust (3" pipe) on an S3, under deceleration?

I have a new high performance cat, an abundance of 3" stainless steel tubing, and a tig welder.

I was thinking of running a straight pipe , but lengthen the overall pipe length by another 6 feet.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Dee, I only got it with a non Cat Pipe. And on the Exige it was with a Sports Exhaust.

I think your only option would be a new exhaust.

Nope, 6 feet.

I was planning on the pipe going down from the turbo to the back, and then once around the back like a trombone.

My idea is to slow down the sound waves by either lengthen the pipe and/or splitting the sound waves.

Crikey...an original idea!!!!! Don't forget to keep us updated on the results...and a recording of the sound would be good, too.

I was hoping someone had already tried it.

I was wonder if the system could be tuned by increasing the length by sliding one pipe inside the other.

This is either brilliant or I'm in need of meds.

I get a nice crackle from mine (at least it sounds OK from the drivers seat) and I have a bog standard exhaust - new stainless back box, no cat though.

Mine crackles and it only has the original lotus box on it.

Are you thinking of using a folded horn design? But for that to work you would need a small throat and a much larger mouth than a standard exhaust opening.

That's about 6' give it take.

I probably would have strapped it to the spoiler with some triangulated tubing design for support. Would save the boot space for sure... :)

Happy to help as usual.

LOL...

The extended pipe length will wrap around the cavity located between the rear bumper and the tranny, and in place the silencer...I wasn't talking about adding a smoke stack.

As I understand it, the crackle is caused by the fuel injection system dumping excess fuel into the cylinder under deceleration so as to avoid a momentarily lean fuel mixture.

I always wondered why none of the other manufacturers had to deal with it?
