Following on from "best albums", some lyrics just stick in ones grey matter and bring a wry grin whenever thought of or heard. Here's a few that do it for me (wots yours?)

"I dreampt about you last night, and I feel out of bed twice, you can pin and mount me like a butterfly.

But take me to the haven of your bed, was something that you never said, Two lumps please, you'r the beez neez, but so am I"... (the smiths: reel around the fountain)

"Gardeners daughter stopped me on my way on the day I was to wed. It is you , who, I wish to share my body with, she said"... (cat stevens: the boy with the moon and stars on his head)

"regrets Iv'e had a few, but then again, to few to mention"... (frank)

"You know I'd sooner forget but I remember those nights

When life was just a bet on a race between the lights

You had your head on my shoulder you had your hand in my hair

Now you act a little colder like you dont seem to care

But believe in me baby and I'll take you away

From out of this darkness and into the day

From these rivers of headlights these rivers of rain

From the anger that lives on the streets with these names

cos I've run every red light on memory lane

I've seen desperation explode into flames

And I dont want to see it again"

Suicidal Tendencies - I love the sarcasm and irony - the got a lot of stick 'back home' in the 'States due to people missing the joke!

*******************************************************

...Doesn't matter I'll probably get hit by a car anyway!

"Insitutionalized"

*******************************************************

Father forgive me for I know not what I do

I tried everything, but I'll leave it up to you

I don't want to live, I don't know why

I don't have no reasons, I just want to die

I'm a suicidal failure, I've got to get some help

I have suicidal tendencies, but I can't kill myself

I'm tired of this way of life, my patience has expired

I'm barely just 19, but my life I will retire

I went down to a rifle store, I bought myself a gun

I pointed it at my head, but I couldn't get the job done

I took all my mothers sleeping pills

I jumped off a freeway bridge

I drank three kinds of poison

And drove my car off a ridge

I beat myself with a bat

Put a noose around my head

I overdosed on heroin

But I'm still not dead

Death may not be the answer, it can't be all that great

But me I'm not into living, with life I can't relate

By some masochistic reasoning, I think that it will be fun

I want to start my second life now

So shoot me with your gun

"Suicidal Failure"

*******************************************************

Don't wanna pump nobody's gas I want more

Don't wanna kiss my bosses ass I want more

Don't wanna take the first job I find I want more

Don't wanna dig coal out of a mine I want more

Slaving in a factory a different kind of insanity

Feels like I'm locked in a cage

Working like a maniac, gave myself a heart attack

For a job that pays minimum wage

Don't wanna work at the golden arches I want more

Don't wanna wash rich mans cars I want more

Don't wanna be nobody's gardener I want more

Don't wanna be a garbage man I want more

"I want more"

"When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked him to forgive me."

LOL!

Even more so with the irony if you DO then get hit by one falling off the side of a container ship!!

"All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me

All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

Just a Pepsi." (Profound stuff! lmao)

Excel "The joke's on you":

It all started when I went to school

You were playing me as the fool

I laugh

We laugh

I laugh... at you!

Screaming at me, you're wasting my time

Your opinion is not worth a dime

I've been waiting for this day so long

That's why I'm writing this song

I laugh

We laugh

I laugh... at you!

Because The Joke's On You!

"When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked him to forgive me."

Great stuff Robin. B)

"Me and the boys thought we had it sussed

Valentinos all of us

My dad said we looked ridiculous

But boy we broke some hearts

In and out of jobs, running free

Waging war on society

Dumb blank faces stare back at me

But nothing ever changed..

Embrace's - Come Back to What You Know

Has to be my fave record :

(snippets)

Come back to what you know,

Take everything real slow

I wanna lose you but I can't Let you go.

Before you interfere,

Let me make it loud and clear, that you got no more to prove.

I'm a fool,

So take it easy on yourself,

There's nothing new about regretting how you felt.

I'll never let you down,

Or ever feel the way that I've been fearing now.

So hang on to what you've got, keep it safe.

Hang on to what you've got,

Keep it safe from harm. You'll find.

There's nothing new that we can't leave behind.

Come back to what you know,

Take everything real slow,

I tried to lose you,

But I got, far too close.

Too busy working at the moment to start digging up lyrics, but I always thought Steven Tyler of Aerosmith could twist a clever phrase.

I also think the lyrics by EVE 6 are pretty clever.

This is my favorite by them, Open Road Song:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight I feel ambitious and so does my foot as it sinks on the pedal

I press it to the floor

I don't need a girl don't need a friend 'cause my friend lonesome's unconditional

We're flying forever bored

And for a moment I love everything that I see and think and feel

I love my broken side view mirror

Cause it's so perfect I'm so perfect you're so perfect you're not here

I hear the change in gears

[chorus]

My pile shakes as I hit eighty on the open road

This is an open road song

[/chorus]

The night is beckoning although I have nowhere to go but home

Feels good to be alone

With every turn comes a new frame of mind if I could frame my mind

where would it hang

[chorus]

I crack a window and feel the cool air cleanse my every pore

as I pour my poor heart out

To a radio song that's patient and willing to listen

My volume drowns it out

Yeah but that's okay cause I sound better than him anyway any day

yeah my voice is sweet as salt

I search for comfort and I find it where I've found it many times before

Times before can be forgotten (yeah)

[chorus]

"Never trust a man with egg on his face!":blink:

I also learned about / invented / discovered the concept of oral sex when I was 9 or 10 from the song "Cleopatra!" :(

"When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked him to forgive me."

I also think the lyrics by EVE 6 are pretty clever.

This is my favorite by them, Open Road Song:

A few things, lyrically, that I really like about this song:

1) Unique subject matter. Something many have felt and experienced that few songs have been made of;

2) Rhyme -- is clever, original -- not the same old stuff;

3) Personification -- of the radio song and the feeling of lonesome;

4) Repetition used to good effect. Particularly the pun of pore, pour, and poor

5) The shift in voice from 1st to 2nd to 3rd person, akin to the shifting thoughts of a lonesome person thinking to himself about others.

. . . . eeek, I have to get back to work!

'Twas on the plains of Irlam,

The year 1815.

Napoleon was sat in his long johns

Suppin' Brasso wi' Josephine.

He'd chewed his nails down to t' quick

So he chewed 'em down to slow.

It was snowing very hard,

When up the backyard

Came a corporal, his nose all aglow.

"Napoleon's Battle for Irlam" by Mike Harding.

Haven't heard it for decades but still remember the start!

I remember listening to this when my boy was born, and the lyrics are framed in his bedroom. He's 10 now, but still likes me to read them to him sometimes:

SAMUEL

"Please dont cry

the ghost and the storm outside

will not invade this sacred shrine

nor infiltrate your mind

my life down I shall lie

if the bogey-man should try

to play tricks on your sacred mind

to tease, torment and tantalise

wavering shadows loom

a piano plays in an empty room

there'll be blood on the clever tonight

when darkness lifts and the room is bright

I'll still be by your side

for you are all that matters

and I'll love you to the day I die

there never need to be a longing in your eyes

as long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine,

ceiling shadows shimmy by

and when the wardrobe towers like a beast of prey

there's a sadness in your beautiful eyes,

you'r untouched, unsoiled, wonderous eyes,

my life down I shall lie,

for you are all that matters

and I'll love you till the day I die..."

One of the best songs ever and definitely the best cover ever!

It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it!

<Thanks Vicki>
