V-BELT TENSION INFOS

Hi guys,

I do not have the WM on hand at the moment so does anyone know the tension of the alternator-water pump belt for the 912 engine with no aircon?

What's about the best way to measure it?

Thanks

V belts tension is not critical....the rule of thumb was always 1/2" to 3/4" movement with thumb pressure on the longest run. About 13 to 15mm.... Scott's quite correct, it is difficult to get the alternator belt tight enough....I use a tyre lever to move the alternator hard over and then do it up. Seems to give the right sort of tension; main thing is it shouldn't slip.

Thanks guys,

I have doubt to have the wrong belt from SJ.... the invoice state V belt for 2.0 liter without aircon but the part number on Steve website is different from the 2.2 liter engine, can't understand the difference.

Also as you can see from the pic below, when I have disassembled the engine the alternator bracket was setted at the minimum, now to get a decent tension I need to set the bracket at his maximum, strange?

Uhmm...maybe the new alternator is the answer...?

Your new belt is possibly a bit too long. I'd be inclined to find a v-belt shop and buy a slightly shorter one...if you still have the old one, the length will be marked on it.

Checked the belt number today and it's wrong assuming the infos here on the forum are right...

Gates 6218MC seems to be right for the AC cars, 950mm long, emailed Steve and waiting as answer.

my original was Gates 6272ESC, any infos?

  • 2 months later...

Bought a Gates 6272 ESC belt as for original fitment on my car and it does not fit!!!!  It's a little bit too short and the alternator is now touching the tensioner adjusting screw so can't see how this belt can be used on my car.

Belt is AV 10x913 La, does anyone can measure the belt to see if i have the correct one?

NO air con on my car, it's just the alternator-water pump-cranshaft aux pulley belt.

thanks

G.

Have a look at this..

http://www.vbelts4less.com/Measuring-Belts_ep_46.html

That should help you to sort out what belt you need. I was fitting an alternator to my boat in Roanne and needed a v belt to suit...fortunately I found a v belt shop just up the road by the harbour...it took me three iterations to find the correct one! The last time, exchanging my belt for free, the owner said "We shut at 6pm, Monsieur....!"

Good luck.....
