really annoying sound when engine cold any ideas? sounds like could be air almost like a kettle boiling whistle?
I did cover the air filter with a large sheet but made no difference so maybe its inlet manifold gasket? its louder at the rear of the engine.

Sounds squeaky, dry clutch release bearing, does depressing the clutch change the noise?

was a new clutch but will give it a go tomorrow, that will really suck if I have to pull the gearbox out! tickover is also sticking at 2000 rpm when I drive it and have checked throttle return springs and cable etc, so could be a couple of faults at the same time

just tried and makes no difference? but I have used a long tube as a hearing aid and it is coming from from the clutch area so could indeed be the thrust bearing! I have had a look in the clutch arm hole and may try to get some WD40 oil on the bearing using a long straw/tube? I have another used bearing in the shed and will look at it first to see if it is possible to oil as I think they are a sealed unit? I dont want to contaminate the clutch with oil! and also dont want to pull the gearbox off!

Hi Rob, here's an answer from Kazakhstan for you, When we were at Brands the other week you mentioned you were having huge problems getting rid of the heat from the engine bay, just wondering if the excessive heat has dried out the bearing, going from memory when I did my S3 the bearings are sealed units but I have heard of an old trick where guys have melted grease in an old pan to liquefy and dropped a bearing in the mixture while still hot, then let it cool off in the hope of re greasing the bearing, dont know if it was a success or not, if it is a heat issue from the engine then it's bound to continue to happen until you can find a way of ducting cool air around the engine.

Good luck.

John.

yeah could be the problem or just unlucky with a bad bearing? I have looked at a spare new rover v8 release bearing and its not sealed 100%. I also have a spare used esprit bearing in the shed not keen on spending £180 on a new one! I have just tried some WD40 down a long straw and it did quiet down some so at least I know what the problem is! just really not in the mood to pull the gearbox out at the moment! I am going to the retro rides gathering on the 31st so it will have to wait untill september. I have sussed out how to cool the engine bay but have no funds at the moment to buy any more parts! so just still taking it out on short trips. Work is less than 2 miles away.

Thanks

Rob

Finally got around to pulling the gearbox out and replacing with a new release bearing, what a friggin job that was! old bearing was not dry and looked and felt ok?

Put it all back together and guess what?

the noise is still the same!!! really depressed now as all that work was for nothing............

Get her ticking over and spray some wd 40 or aero start round about the inlet gasket, if the tickover changes then you know its the gasket.
