Rusty chargecooler tank

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new to this forum, I would really appreciate some words of wisdom........

I have an issue with my chargecooler and water cooler tanks on my 89 SE. Problem is they are both past their sell by dates and need to be replaced or re-conditioned. The two problems I am facing are: -

1) How do I get to the three nuts that hold the tanks on?

2) Anyone any advice regarding the source for the replacements?

Thanks

Is the header tank leaking? If not you might be able to CLR it. I did a tank while the tank was still in the car and got all the rust out. The CC usually just needs to be cleaned out I took mine out to clean it. I did use some hose adapters/ barbs and back flushed the system.

I got mine off Geoff at Esprit Engineering top quality alloy number... you get to thr nuts through the side where the wiring loom pops out, easy with boot floor removed...

Many thanks for the responses so far. The existing CC tank isn't in good shape, I suspect a cleaning job may buy me a little time however I am probably delaying the enevitable! I have investigated two purchase options, both are coming in at around the

Do the plastic single tank conversion 1/2 the price and 1/2 the levels to keep an eye on.

This is the one used on all Esprits after 1994.

I'm doing it for the race car, like you my steel tank looks like it's come from the Mary Rose.

I haven't proof tested it yet but it should be a case os simply swapping the tank over, new level sensor and 2 new pipes and fittings and it's a go - cost me

Pretty good value (and just added that site to favourites - cheers B) )

Prob is there's only 3 ports, you need 4 :

1) Pump suction

2) Turbo coolant return to tank (missing)

3) Over pressure drain to expansion tank

4) Air bleed from radiator pressure line

It's the coolant line back from the turbo you need, if you can weld one in you're laughing but then you need a charge cooler tank as well.

Thanks again for the help on this. I am very interested in the progress Jonathan is making with the conversion job, from the diagram it certainly doesn't look too complex. When I spoke with SJ they also talked about several parts required for the job.

Regarding the tank on the Forge site, this looks very close to me. Sadly I have handed over my existing tank so sadly can't review it but I recall only three ports excluding the refill cap. There is a pic here from the esprit engineering site (http://www.espritengineering.co.uk/menus/viewimage.asp?image=/images/se%20header%20tank.JPG). The bottom port I believe is for the inlet to the pump, the lower side port I thought connected back to the chargecooler by the coolant fill hole, have seen this referred to as "air bleed hose spigot", am not quite sure how this has air in it given it fits to the bottom of a tank filled with water but hey!!!! The upper side port (just below cap) is I assume pressure release. Have I missed something?

If you're just doing the CC tank then only 3 ports are used as you correctly pointed out - my previous post was for the main coolant tank which might have been misleading.

Dunno exactly how the air blleds work, all I do know is the Esprit is the easiest car I've done a coolant change on for getting rid of air locks and getting the coolant flowing quickly and cleanly without 2 sozen air bleed screws and burns hands :D

Hi Guys,

I have a few options for you. If anyone is thinking of buying from Forge then pm me first as I should be able to get them for a fraction less.

Also I can get a price from Forge for making a bespoke CC tank. All I need is the original to send to them.

The other option is a stainless steel tank which looks the dogs bollocks. I started drawing various other Esprit ones up and they come in at about

Hi Rob,

Check R&B, it's excellent product, made from Al. I fitted it last week. Flush your CC system with clean water, small rusty parts will damage your impeller.
