I just picked up a '1978 504' in theory. The problem is it doesnt have any documents, number plates or exterior badges. It does have 'Elite 2.2' on the dash centre console, a galvanised chassis and an autobox with power steering.

 

Is there a VIN decoder for Lotus cars I could use to check?

Sounds like someone has modernised an older car during a restoration or a chassis swap.

Pm me the engine number and I can tell you what spec it is and what it is meant to be powering. The plaque at the top of the pillar is another clue. It should say 504, but if it says "world champion car constructors" the the badge was originally from an s2

Are you sure it's a 78?  If it has a galvanised chassis it's likely to be a an Elite S2 (Type 83).

 

The light pods are down, so there's one less thing to worry about.

S2 doors have a raised moulding to mount the mirrors on, another clue?

And the wheel nuts dont have an L stamped on them.

Sounds like an S2 to me.

The Cill covers and mirrors appear to be from an s2. The front spoiler is also s2, but this is a very common addition to an s1
