speedo right angle drive

When i pulled out of Stoneliegh, to go to the Porrage Pot for dinner with friends, i noticed that the speedo was not working fortunatly i had the tomtom with me so i could get home without getting a ticket

anyway, i checked the speedo cable was ok by feeding it up through the holes for filling the gearbox, and, putting a drill on the end i could see the speedo was working through the bulkhead glass.

the right-angle drive however, is FUBAR

very notchy and only engages occasionally.

Has anyone got a spare one lying around they can sell me?

however, the S1+2 have a different part number to the S3+T

S1+2 = A079N6004f

S3+T = A079F6292f

Anyone know the diff between them??

ok, today i went to a scrapyard in shropshire owned by Furbers.

they have a HC Turbo in there, that has been in there for 7+ Years , and now i know why

after an Hour long jouney to get there, i was greeted with "you will have to come back in the week - NO parts can be removed on the weekend"

they wouldnt even let me look at the car, its there, i could see it

a 60 mile 2 hour round trip for nothing

i only went there cause i wanted to get the car on the road today, the weather is perfect

i have now Emailed Mike at Lotusbits as i couldnt get through on the phone, so got to wait to see if he has one.

Furbers has REALLY Pi55ed me off

I hate having to wait for things

Dave, did you notice there was a grease nipple on the Speedo right angle drive?

I doubt many people bother to grease them

If the weathers nice why not cash in the 'free' miles on your limited policy mate?

dont need to do that, i have unlimited milage on mine

unfortunatly, i cannot drive it due to the drive unit not on the car, and having to move the exhaust out of the way to take it off

there seems to be grease in there Wayne, but not alot else

i will be paying paticular attention to that when i do the trunions (grease, not oil like the trunions)

sj only sell a gear set to go inside, but mine is the oe mk1 sealed unit

paul matty only list them for the S1 and S2

ideas please????

ok, just for clarity , the differance between a S1-2 and a S3> 87

the above is a early one

the one below is fitted to the later s3>

just emailed lotus aftersales, so now the wait. ..ooh got an e-mail .... just a confermation of my request, nice touch though

as the drive was u/s , i thought i would take it apart to see inside.

I recieived an E-Mail from Dave Massey at Lotus today.

The part has been obsolite for five years now and they have none

now i have found it comes apart ( i dont think it was suposed to) Should i chance the SJ gearkit?

my concern is :- is the RAD a079f6292f was replace by a modified b079f6292f early on, if mine is a early unit, will the gears still fit??

will be a pain in the butt if they dont, as a week would go by and would be no further on.

Watch this space............

just emailed SJ to ask if the gear kit they sell fits both versions a+b

for the record, here is the update which should be the last.

the new gears i recieved today, were from SJ.( they are the shiny ones in the bottom right of the picture below)

unfortunatly, they are JUST the gears - no shafts attached

the old ones are held in by Roll pins and the new gears are pre-drilled, but the holes are nowhere near OH WELL, never mind, these things happen.

after removing the old gears(i used a old 2mm drill to knock the pins out), its just a case of fitting the new ones,drilling a new hole (i used a new 2mm drill this time)and fitting the pins.

then put it all back together

OH DON'T forget to Grease the gears through the nipple

its all back together now

can anyone recomend the best grease to use please
