Hi Mick,

I have been told by someone with very good knowledge of esprits that the usual cause for this is a buildup of brake dust and dirt on the wheel sensors. Only one of them has to be like this for the ABS light to come on.

That is common - or the sender can fail. It'd be the 1st thing I would check and the fronts are usually the ones to go first.

Jack the car, if you have a multi meter to hand set it to AC or Hz and stick it on the terminals of the ABS computer in the front of the car (blue and red Wires or either one to earth) - chase them back to see where they go.

Spin the wheel and see if you're getting voltage.

Or you can take it to a dealer/specialist and get them to plug a Tech1 onto it.

Try the front near side 1st...

I had the same problem - check all the electrical plugs on the master cylinder too. If it's the wheel sensor, the light will only come on when you move off. Brake light switch another common cause, ABS pressure switch also very commonly fails.

I managed to change the pressure switch before noticing that one of the plugs was disconnected from the master cylinder - ABS light now off!

I had the light come on after I replaced the brake light bulbs for LED units. As LED's pull almost no current and the ABS ECU uses the brake light switch to tell it your breaking it got confused as it was not pulling enough load to tell the ECU it was breaking.

Replaced the LED bulbs for normal ones and all is fine. Could be worth a check of the bulb holders in the lights

Hi Mick,

We need more info. Does it come on after the engine is started? If it does then check your bulbs. If your bulbs are OK then look at the ABS unit and pressure switch. If it stays out but comes on as soon as you drive a short distance then check your ABS sensors.
