Alternative Wheels & Rims

Hey Guys,

 

I have a '87 S3 turbo, and been thinking of changing the wheels/rims to 17" as the tyers are easy to get.

 

What size non-standard wheels have people been able to fit without problems?

 

I think 18" would be a bit too big......

There have been a few threads about this already, well worth doing a search.  I'd be interested in what you find, the offset of the rear wheels is one of the issues...

Hey Simon,

 

I've done allot of searching, here and other sites and not really found an answer.

 

More looking for things like:

- Im running 355 wide tires and they fit great

or

- Went to 355 tyres and look silly, and they hit the guard.

 

Seems to be more info on '88 & newer models, but is the available space the same?

 

Was thinking of getting a few cheap wheels from the Wreackers and trialing myself, but thats a bit extreem

I am hopeing to go for a "sympathetic" style of rim yes,

But was wondering what width tyre/rim will fit the G cars?

 

The guards seem to have plenty of room around them (particularly the back), but I have driven an '88 whos front wheels were rubbing whenever you turned the steering wheel.

I would rather not make that mistake

Stevens cars (including 88 Federal) got 5x108 bolt circle wheels and thicker M14 lug bolts. Prior to that they were 5x114,5 and had a thinner bolts (M12, ?).

Due to a model mix/variety and production "running changes", first, check your car dimensions carefully and then start looking at a different  options. Even, if someone implemented a modification, never assume that you will be able to duplicate it. Always measure, check and re-check, again.

my wheels are front 8jx17+25 tyre 205/40/17 and the rears were 9jx17 +20 they had a 3 inch wide outer rim that was replaced with a 5 1/2 inch wide outer rim by image wheels to take them out to 11.5j. and run 315\35\17 tyre no issues with rubbing on arches. Check my build thread for pics.

17" later G-car tire options via the auto wreckers;

BBS/BMW Style 42 17x8" 5x120 two-piece rims with 72.6mm hub centre and 20mm offset. P/N 36111094377.  215/45R17 and 255/45R17 tires shown here.

Use 71>72.6mm hubcentric rings and 50mm rear spacer adapters for BMW.

BMW also fitted 7.5 & 9" widths or a 18x8 18x9" combo in this style

I personally think they look totally wrong with anything bigger than an original 15” wheel the fat tyre is part of the look and place more work on the suspension. Tyres aren’t a problem just the the vredestein sport trac 5, 195/60 15 and 225/60 15

Yes, I've got the Vredsteins on my other wheels, but that's it for matching tire choices here in the states, unless you want to put muscle car tires on with a lower speed rating.  I do miss the deep lip on the original rear wheel.....

Printed some hub caps in ABS for the above to cover the bearing cap. PM me if you've gone this route and want the .stl file
