Hi

Can anyone confirm:

Are S3 tanks the same as on a Turbo?

Upgrade today to remove Google ads and support TLF.

Does the car have the "full size" crossover pipe between the tanks which allows a complete fill from one side or the small-bore equalising pipe which earlier cars had?

Interesting The 82 turbo has large connection pipe on the fuel tanks.

The NA HC has a small bore rubber should it have the same as the turbo.

No, I was just checking if my memory was correct as I recalled the NA cars had the thin pipe.

 

So, the answer to the OPs question is no, the tanks are not the same.

Speaking as someone who thought the tanks were the same...until I bought some secondhand ones and spent a fair time on repairing them too....only to find they were nothing like the ones in the car(!)....I'd be very wary of assuming tanks from different models match.

I think the turbo tanks have a swirl pot at the bottom which is why they are that much more difficult to remove.

OK they have a pick up in a pot in the bottom that will be to maintain fuel pressure during cornering when you get low on fuel as it will wash away from the pick up i suspect. but then i did not know they were any different from all S3's.

Although the n/a tanks were a doddle to fit if  I were doing it again I would have them made with a large bore cross over pipe.  If I brim one tank it takes 3-4 minutes of driving before the gauge settles at its final  correct point as the fuel balances across.

I always fill from the none sender side i like watching the fuel gauge going up when driving LOL
