Straight to the point

Recommended Posts

Hello folks.

This should be a quick one.

If you take the ECU out of an S4 and replace the one in an S4s (with a dodgy ECU) and then you swap over the memcal (i.e. extract from dodgy S4s and ..... well you get the picture).

Would the ECU now behave like an S4s?

Initial finding confirm this but I thought I'd throw it out to the forum to gain more confidence in the 'operation'

Thanks again

Steve H

I've got one if you're interested. £150 and you can try it and if it cures your problem then pay me otherwise return it assuming it doesn't get damaged. Trevor.

FYI, that ebayer is Douglas Valley Breakers, well known for being absolute arseholes in my experience. May sure you pay with paypal for buyer protection.

The ECUs are identical from 89SE through the 95S4s. The MEMCALs are identical, just the programming on the EPROM chip are different.

The ECU is from a GM, and are usually cheap at under $100, the MEMCAL cartridges are Lotus Esprit specific, and are rare...

Have a look here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-Esprit-Engine-ECU-Esprit-S4-Engine-ECU-L0920099-Esprit-Engine-ECU-/291292131303?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43d25d2fe7

What do you think?.  Taff at SGT is 99% sure of what's been said above - along with another esprit 'historian' (he gave me his name which I immediately forgot but is apparently a big wig on this subject)

Funny how we tend to say 99% just to be 'allowed to be wrong' !

Anyhow - I'll get the ebay item once I get a 4th 'yes'.

In the meantime I'll send the ebay a question regarding what happens if it's faulty.

Incidentally while my car was at SGT waiting for a 'supposed repaired' (please don't ask!) ECU, the car was driven to a body shop for some small scuff work using a GT3 ECU.

Right.  Off to make contact with an ebayer I don't know about a part I can't afford to put in a car which will probably work....

Cheers for the input

The ECU is ~£80

The AC DELCO part number is 1228708

But you would need to swap your Memcal cartridge to the new ECU.  So you'd need to know if is the memcal cartridge that is bad or the ECU or both....

The one that you linked, does not specifically say that it contains a MEMCAL...  I would ask.  It might be worth that to some, just due to having a MEMCAL (if it in fact has one)...

The ECU's often go bad, and most peple have success swapping their MEMCAL into the new ECU for £80...

What a great forum!!

I was told that getting to the ECU is easy and goes something like this:

1) RHS of boot area

2) Behind plastic

3) Unit held in place by 2 screws (undo screws)

4) Pull plugs out of old unit

5) Remove unit

6) While static free extract memcal

7) Connect to new/replacement ECU

8) reverse of point 4) backwards

Trevor.

Well done - you have gone right to the top of my Christmas card list :unworthy:

No one else has ever achieved this.  Probably because I don't send Christmas cards.

Anyway - what can I say?  Your offer is superb and I fully accept.

Allow me to pay for the postage side.

If it does not cure the issues (which is apparently unlikely because the company who tried to repair mine called it 'scrap') then I'll pay return postage at least.

If you PM me your sort code and a/c number (I suspect thats a better option than laying it out there on a public forum) then I can give you address details (ditto) etc etc - or any other way you'd like it.

This will be REALLY good news if it works out.

Thanks * 1 million!

Wow - I could have done with some good news !  (that's probably a bit premature)

You certainly know your ECU stuff.  Knowing the ECU's 'generic' model, as it were.

I'll drop it off to Taff at SGT if you like or at your place, neither is far away. A word of warning on the EBay item, looks to have come out of a fire damaged car.

Trevor.

I'll get around to it at some point.

Simon - I couldn't agree with you more ... extraordinary generous.

Trevor - I can't thank you enough (whilst keeping ones's feet firmly on the floor incase it does not solve the issue - but my comment is more about your willing to help rather than the 'box').

I know what you mean by fire damaged - if we're talking about the same car - and it's a shame as it's a lovely colour and one less Esprit on the road.

Whichever is easiest for you regarding delivery:

- My wife is (mostly) at home tomorrow (Friday) however that's a bit short notice realistically, so that's only on the off-chance that you would be around the area so don't feel obliged to make extraordinary arrangements for what is a massive favour

- SGT: be aware that the owner sold the place and the people there have bought it up so it's not the large car sales place anymore; they are now a Lotus and Morgan specialist and don't sell cars.  Taff is working on a rather nice old Ferrari for the moment though.  Anyway the point is they have moved a couple of hundred yards from where they used to be.  Not sure of your knowledge of the area but from where they used to be you'd drive toward the A4 under the railway bridge and they're on the left on a sort-of 'shared area'.  There are signs though.

- Or I can come to you/meeting place

- Or if there is an amazing coincidence and you're going to the huge NEC classic / performance car event on Saturday as we are!!

Ok - I'll break a rule (I'm not really that paranoid) :-  MOD Edit: Don't be daft. Putting your home address on a public forum is reckless. Send a Trev a PM.

I would love to offer a token of my appreciation for the effort/time etc if you'd PM your details (or use paypal) - I feel that I need to but I won't push the point if you're ok with things - but the offer is definitely there whatever the outcome.

As far as timing is concerned, please make it at your convenience.

Once again  - thanks a lot.  I wish there were more people out there with the same attitude (that's not a comment on any of the contributors on here but more to do with people generally these days!)

If you have any questions/suggestions then fire away.

Thanks again for your help and thanks also to the comments made by others here, including posting those pictures and dodgy breakers!

Damn - I'm heavily in the negative zone with my regards to contribution points - I MUST find some way of helping someone out here!!!

BTW...

Do Not remove the fuse from the ECU, or disconnect the battery, while the key is in the ignition... it can damage the ECU.

Also I would not jump start the car or charge the battery while the battery is connected to the car... I always remove the battery for charging.

Fair play - and I've sent all the details in a PM. as you've mentioned .   Apologies.

I agree with the MOD(Advantage) it took me less then a minute to find your house and soon to be fully serviceable shiny S4s....

Worthwhile check list - ta.

Years ago I had to repair circuit boards so I know about Mr Static but - like you mention - getting things in the right order is extremely important.

How would you jump start a car when the battery isn't connected?

I've had to jump start a couple of times, not been an issue.

I was saying "do not jump start" and "do not charge the battery while connected to the car"...

I know a V8 esprit owner who destroyed 2 $800 V8 ECUs... he kept letting the battery drain. And charged it while connected to the car.

Update:

ECU delivered to Taff and then to me.  The thing looks brand new!!

The boss at SGT commented that it was nice to see that there are still generous/genuinely good people around.

My fingers are so crossed that they've gone blue!

Damn the winter months! Too dark to do anything now.

Then it's the NEC thing tomorrow

Then it's Sunday - when it will probably be storm force winds and near-tropic rain !!

Seriously though - thanks again to Trevor.  I really hope this all works.

Logic dictates it should sort it out - but sometimes logic misbehaves!

Info for others - the ECU looks new and it's shrink wrapped !  Talk about quality.

Result:

I won't explain methods/tools/what I did etc (unless you really want to know) but the main thing is......

(drum roll)

The permanent CEL fault has GONE.

I won't jump around the place because sods law will jump into the engine bay and put it back to how it was before.

I now owe a certain person £150 which is probably the best £150 I've ever spent.

Trevor is the best friend I've never seen!

(Is that taking it  bit too far....?)

P.S. Anyone go to the NEC thing - some nice Esprits and Stags there.

Funny.

Since this was on the site with the real address I've received a lifetimes supply of Viagra, hard core porn, some white powder and a couple of guns!

No wait - I remember ebaying for them......
