Essex Chassis Number List! - Misc including parts cross references - The Lotus Forums Jump to content

Recommended Posts

All - as per previous mails - I've taken it upon myself to try to collate a list of Essex cars. This all started with the keen interest in both Lotus F1 / Giugiaro ownership and the fact my mate owns No.17!!

Also as it seems no-one has ever tried to track these cars down................

Here goes. This list provenance comes from a letter from the Factory from J Stuart Allison - the factory records controller dated September 1992. I've tried to gain as much info as possible to confirm and track todays whereabouts speaking to owners etc. and using as much info/articles/books and having kept an eye out for these cars over the last 16 or so years as long as Paul (No.17) and I have owned the cars........

This is a typed copy of the records from the factory complete with my comments on 'where are they now'.

Any corrections/additions please feel free to add mail me etc. Bibs - can this perhaps be added as a 'sticky' topic for interest?

"22nd September 1992

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

I can state for certain that 22 'Essex' Esprit Turbos were built and that I suspect four other vehicles to be 'Essex' cars. There are no customer names against the cars, only the selling dealer. We also suspect that 001 and 002 were existing cars which were re-sprayed.

The first Esprit Turbo allocated to Colin Chapman was 0970GT painted in Silver and finished February 1981.

(Currently owned by Mike Ford UK - Reg.UVF 464X)

I list below the known 'Essex' Turbos with the selling dealer:

Essex Number/ Chassis Number/ Selling Dealer

001 Not Recorded

Possibly THE Bond 'For Your Eyes Only car' Reg OPW 678W. Was for Sale by Coys early 2006. Current whereabouts unknown.

002 Not Recorded

Possibly the car currently owned by Ian Churm Cleveland UK - Reg.MPW 71V. Test car for V8 - Demo for Pinewood Studios for Bond film as resprayed Copper.

003 0902GT Rylands

004 0899GT Goldblatt

Currently owned by Steven Tryner UK

005 0903GT Bell and Colvill

006 0900GT Bell and Colvill

007 0907GT Goldblatt

Currently Owned by Roy Bryant UK Reg.G90 7W

008 0904GT Norfolk Motor Co

009 Not Recorded

010 0906GT Bell and Colvill

013 0937GT Cubleys

014 0934GT Goldblatt

015 0935GT Bell and Colvill

016 0936GT Vardy

017 0941GT Randles

Currently owned by Paul Dewey Coventry UK Reg.OVU 84W

018 0942GT SGT

019 0943GT Broadway

020 0944GT Cathedral

021 0945GT Norfolk Motor Co

022 0946GT South Africa

023 0948GT British and Guernsey

024 Not Recorded

025 0950GT Portman

100 0949GT Supplied to Mark Thatcher (Margarets Son)

Currently owned by Ken Baird Elstree UK Reg.UAH 27W

0895, 0926, 0927, 0932 were all painted in Essex Blue ahd had full red leather interiors but there is no other indication that these are 'Essex' Turbos.

Yours sincerely,

J. Stuart Allison

Lotus Database Controller."

As you can see by the chassis numbers there are chassis built earlier than some of the official Essex cars so they were not the very first Turbos?!!

Chassis 0962 (Reg.OPW 679W) was Mike Brewers car as mentioned in earlier threads now in the Haynes Museum which was Essex Spec but seems not an official Essex car though Mike believes it was sent to Pinewood Studios.

Mike thinks there were around 120 Dry-Sumped cars......................

I cannot find any details as if David Thieme was actually supplied a car though i have read one was delivered to Monaco. Anyone know which one?

Lets hope this captures a definitive list and perhaps one day.............an re-union?!!!! :P

I know of the three "commemorative" cars that Jim Loose imported.  My understanding was that all three of those cars were shipped in white.  I have also heard that they were later cars.   This one s

Seems interest in the Essex Turbos is on the rise....and rightly so. Even though I'm a card carrying JPS owner I have a soft spot for the Essex, essentially a continuation of the F1 themed Esprits tha

Can vouch for 022 0946GT South Africa

Will see if I can get a few pics in a week or two when the owner's back in SA.

- I'll try and confirm VIN numbers and stuff. Not in great condition 'fraid, but at least it's still around...

Cheers - Mark

A bit more info for you...

Lotus Engineers have been researching this themselves for the last year.

They have been working with Steve Tryner (owner of Essex No. 004) for the last year to confirm the actual build numbers and to identify the whereabouts of all the cars.

They have identified all the 'Essex' units built but have not been able to

confirm the whereabouts of all the cars despite many requests worldwide.

Some UK cars have been exported to Japan but we have been unable to confirm ownership.

They have now brought the investigation to a close and will publish their

findings shortly.

If anybody has any information that could help complete the list we would be interested in talking to them.

31 UK Spec. Cars (4 Dev., 4 Pre. Production & 23 Production)

14 Export Cars (3 Dev. & 11 Production)

This makes a total of 45 Cars identified as 'Essex' Units.

No USA Specification 'Essex' cars were built at the factory.

hi.

ian churms here.

im listed as owner of MPW 71V,(on lotus esprit world) the essex which is belived to be the first turbo car built by lotus.

i am not and was not the owner of the car but was the sole driver and maintainer of the car while in the employ as vehicle technician of a mr jim brennan of cleveland uk.

while working for mr brennan i was assigned the task of driving, maintaning and showing the car MPW 71V.

he gave me permission to advertise the car as my own as i was the only person trusted to drive the car (as it was difficult explaining the situation of driving/being there with it!).

i no longer work for mr brennan but am still in contact with him now and again, ill try to get the chassis number of the car if it helps in the search for the location of the essexs'.

i do know that due to the fact that MPW 71V was a pre-production prototype it is not one of the numbered production cars, but is registered through DVLA as an essex.

it was not fitted with the roof mounted radio, but was built with the dry sump motor which was removed by lotus when they decided to use it as the test bed for their V8 project.

it is now fitted with a later 2.2 turbo se engine, which was fitted by the previous owner who bought it from lotus uk.

he was from near newcastle, north east eangland.

my old boss bought it from him.

mr brennan still owns the car, i saw it 2 weeks ago at his residence, as far as i know, it does not do many miles any more, it had 32000 miles on it when i left his employ, but i hope to start driving it again come spring as we have come to a mutual aggreement over driving his exotica( 2 esprits and a testarossa) on a weekend after a couple of years of hardship.

if anyone needs details on the essex i still remember quit a bit of its history, just ask!!

good look in the hunt...

ian.

Hi

I have a few pics taken at SGT Maidenhead in mid-1981 of Essex No.18 (I can confirm the number, as one of the pics is of the badge on the rear buttress!). The car (which was presumably back at SGT for its first service) was registered “217 AD” – this fills in one little gap in the listing!

I also have a pic taken of the second development turbo KAH 540V in about 1985 (at the Mildenhall air show, I think!). This car is blue and decorated as an Essex but appears to have non-standard labelling on the nose (the word “Turbo” is hollow like “Esprit” – presumably a pre-production styling?). Bizarrely it also has its aerial mounted on the near-side, although it is a right-hand drive car. Wonder where this car is today?

But remember one thing: don't lose your head to a woman that'll spend your bread: Lotus Turbo Esprit (89-11); Lotus Esprit GT3 (12-14): Lotus Evora S (14-17); Lotus Esprit V8 SE "UK Last 15" (18-...)

Mike,

As per Brians Table - One of the first Development Essex's:

Dev. 1 SCCDC20A8AHD10858 Lotus Cars 80 RHD CD910791117542 09/07/1980 NCL 458V Lotus Cars Dev. Car 1 - Colour - Blue - White - Bronze (Originally badged 001) - Now 459 JTA

Does anyone (Brian?) know the Chassis number of the Copper/White Bond car(s)?

Mike - I also suspect that this car was one of 'THE' 007 Esprits.

Another car VIN.10930 was the Copper 007 Turbo and was kept at Hethel and went to the Cars of the Stars Museum and was at auction recently? Anyone know what happened there?

I presume 10858 was possibly one of / the White car used?

Wouldn't it be an opportunist moment for the 'New' Esprit to be featured in the next Bond film?!!!!!

By sheer chance whilst at PNM today I got talking to the current owner of No 18 who is doing a ground up restoration on it. I'm popping in to see him next week and I'll see if he wants to post some info here.

Mat

Just back from visiting Mark Jarrold who owns Essex No 18....................... and also JPS No 66!

What a sight, arrive at his house, pulls back barn door and there they are JPS and Essex parked next to each other!

Mark tells me he knows Clive Chapman and used to race a Type 61. He has restored his JPS and it's roadworthy and a stunner. He bought the Essex a while back and it hasn't been started for approx 5 years. His plan is to completely restore it as original. The car looks a little tired but also completely original with no evidence of any form of damage.

I took a few pics and I'll upload on photobucket prob over the coming weekend. Here's a couple for starters....

Interesting reading.

I can concour with your thoughts cbclotus.

I too have just agreed the purchase of an S3 after being Espritless for 10 years.

However, I always hankered for the extra oomph of the turbo so I am still looking at a couple of cars at the weekend, just don't expect them to be in the condition they are advertised and didn't want to lose out on the n/a S3 which is a good deal for the age/condition.

Also, I'm a little nervous of buying a turbo for exhileration factor and then being disappointed that it is blown into the weeds by the Seven. :welcome:
