Interactive arts sculpture trail & Lotus

Recommended Posts

I'm sure most on here are familiar with the trend in interactive arts sculpture trails that pop up in towns and cities during the summer months. Well I found out last Friday (19.12.14) that I have been commissioned to paint one of the sculptures in the new trail happening in Norwich City for 2015 called GoGo Dragons.

What's special about my commissioning is it will be Lotus related, it will be celebrating Jim Clark's win of the Indianapolis 500 of 1965, with next year being the 50th celebration of this event and his last F1 world championship win. I can't give too many details out at the moment regarding design, but it's going to be well liked and everyone so far who has seen it has said it's a winner.

The whole process started back in July 2014 with the idea presented to Classic Team Lotus and the Jim Clark Trust. I'm pleased to say both parties have been very helpful and keen to support the event granting permission for designs to be used and thus helping support a charitable cause run by the Break Charity.

I should get my dragon in the new year ready to start the whole process and finish it by the end of April 2015. So please if you have time, come and visit the Norwich dragon trail and have a picture with the Lotus dragon.

Obviously if you like my design you can always bid on it when all the dragons come up for auction at the end of the summer, around September October time.

Here's a picture of how big they will be.

Dragon has arrived at my home and work has already started, no time like the present even if it is Christmas!

I've started to make the helmet which measures 18" across, these dragons have big heads! Also marked out the dragon to pop a lot of rivets, supplies required!

As much as I would like, it won't be happening. The Dragon event starts in May, so it will be in the City until the event ends around late September time. I am planning a Lotus related event around the first week of June (June 7th), just a week after the Indy 500 was raced in 1965, the event will be at the Forum in Norwich and I hope to have the dragon attending as well as some additional Lotus stuff.

Hi, just a brief update as to how my interactive art sculpture is coming on, here are some pics of my progress. I've nearly finished all the fibreglass and filler work, which I'm glad of, not a fan of the dust and smell of resin! I've just got to dremel the feet tyre pattern a little more then it will all be done with just the helmet gap filling in once it goes on for good.

I'm pleased with the how the helmet has turned out and it's going to look great once it's all painted up dark blue like Jim's helmet. Another week and the last job will be to make the exhausts, which I have all the pipe work for.

The helmet is finally on for good and filled in. The air intakes are also on and just need pin hole filler rubbed down. This coming weekend should see all the fibreglass work completed, then it's onto the exhaust making!

My dragon is coming on, all the fibreglass work is complete and now I'm on to making the exhaust. Haven't done any welding for a while so was pleased to be making the exhaust and a change from filler work. Also today Scott finished my goggle surrounds which are excellent and have now gone off to be anodised, thanks to CTL. Paint work should start next week, a little behind my target date, but not by much.

Construction of my dragon is all done and now and I'm on to painting. All the exhausts are finished and will be painted soon. Here are some pics of the progress, with colour being added this weekend it should start to look something.

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

You've definitely put a lot of work into your dragon.

Compared to most of the others that have only had a paint brush whisked over them yours is going to be one of the best for sure.

It's my big IndyGoGo500 dragon reveal day this Sunday 7th June. If you can pop along it will be nice to see you and I think you will be pleasantly surprised how the dragon turned out.

Reveal is at 11.30 am

Hi All, Well I had my dragon reveal today and the whole event was a massive success for all parties involved. The crowds loved IndyGoGo500 and all the cars on display were received well. There was talk it might become a regular thing, I know for sure it's made people more aware of the brand and that classic Lotus racing cars are still active.

There was the odd comment that some people thought the Jim Clark car was in fact a replica! Parents even asked if it was OK for their kids to sit in it! I think not!

Some pictures of the day. If you want to see the dragon in the flesh, it will be in Chapelfield Mall in Norwich from the 21 June until late September.
