Turbo SE barely starts, massive smell of fuel etc

Recommended Posts

The car was running fine but after sitting for only a week now barely starts and when it does it idles between 200 and 400rpm, reeks of fuel and stalls. Any throttle input stalls the engine and the plugs are coated with fuel.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Cheers,

Dunc.

Could you describe the start-up a little more? Does it start, run for a short while (say 30 sec to a minute) and then sputter and die, does it always die when touching the throttle?

Having it idle between 200-400 rpm shouldn't even happen. From what I can recall the crank sensor wouldn't allow firing in those ranges.

Thanks for the responses, it starts eventually (no throttle) and runs for 10-30secs at extremely low revs, don't think the rev counter reads much below 500rpm so couldn't guarantee the exact revs, it's way too low though.

I've reset the ecu using the battery, and replaced the plugs. The one's I removed were drenched in fuel and the new one's ran the car fine for about 3secs before they were fouled as well then back to the low idle/struggling to run.

Massive smell of fuel but don't have the scan stuff for Abby further details.

Thanks,

Dunc.

Check the connection of the hose from the manifold to the MAP sensor, check the rubber elbows for cracks.

Check the IAC, remove and clean it. It would be best if you can get some freescan data.

Does the spark look strong on all 4?

There is a diagram under the hatch.

The port for the MAP is on the rear of the intake manifold under the fuel pressure regulator. It is a rubber 90 deg elbow and a small diameter hard plastic line. It goes to the MAP sensor under the body near the right fuel filter flap, where the bolts go through the body to hold the MAP sensor bracket.

Thanks for the description Vulcan, I've also discovered another strange thing, see the photos below. This vac pipe from one of the sensors is blanked off. This can't be the problem because the car was fine before but I'm still interested what this is about.

Also there's a large cylinder container under the two coolant header tanks, any suggestions to what this is?

My car has a couiple of blocked vacuum lines, one is to the non-existent EGR valve, the othe to the throttle jack. At least I think so. The cylindrical container could be the charcoal canister - check out the first two photos in my engine removal thread in this same section, youu should be abel to see if it's identical.

I remain unconvinced that the charcoal canister cannot somehow be removed, but I shall have to do some thinking, and read Travis's posts on the subject first. The catalyst for this opinion was being quoted £187 + VAT + postage for a new one (about $375 for our US friends) from an American parts specialist when I know they're $80 in Walmart. That differential doesn't sit very well with me.

Other cars have taken priority recently but back to take a look at this now, I've checked the spark plugs and it's sparking fine. I've also checked the throttle position sensor, but now I'm thinking I should drain the tank and put fresh fuel in before trying anything else.

Looking for pointers on draining the tank :)

Thanks in advance,

Dunc.
