Esprit S3 gearbox oil

Recommended Posts

Hello all

Could anyone recommend a good gearbox oil for my 1986 esprit S3? I have heard about redline MT90 and castrol syntrans. Is one better than the other? Or can anyone recommend anything else?

Thanks, Darren

Hi Darren, and welcome to TLF!

It's been talked about quite a bit on here so hopefully some searches will uncover more info, but IIRC it seems just as important to use slightly more oil than the book specifies.

Good luck with it all.

I've used both MT90 and Syntrans, and various other brands.

Personally I prefer the feel (shift & syncro action) of Syntrans over MT90   TBH The best was a semi synthetic multigrade, GL4  but I moved away from that as I felt it may not give CWP enough protection.

The answer may also depend on how many miles the box has done - but I don't know the answer to that...

Hi Darren,

I have used MT90 in my '86 with no issues. Nothing to compare with however...

Look at Opie Oils - often have good deals - might sway you one way or t'other

Why not also post on the introductions thread and tell us a little about yourself/car

Thanks for the welcome and your posts. My esprit has covered 44000 miles. I did read about that it's good to slightly overfill to add better protection, also castrol syntrans seems more widely available than redline MT90. Thank you DaveyT and 910esprit. Hoping to get the job done this weekend if I can.

Don't know why it's took me so long to get on TLF. I've had my esprit for 4 years now. I only do about 1000 to 1500 miles a year in the esprit. But I've not done the gearbox oil so it's time to change it.

Hi simon

That's a good idea! Thanks. I'll do that. Yes just found some good reviews about redline MT90. Just seems a little harder to get hold of. In terms of stockists. Can get it online though. Just wanted to do it this weekend. Mmmm food for thought.

Thanks simon.

Hi,

Darren,

After a gearbox rebuild end 2010, I have used redline MT90.

Last year, after 3 years I changed the oil for Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90.

Both oils performed well. I just could get the castrol better priced around here.

Hello Geert

Thanks for your post. Yes castrol syntrans and redline MT90 seem to be the most popular choices. Like you said castrol syntrans seems to be more widely available and a little cheaper although that's not important as I want the best for my esprit. But it seems both do a good job. Also had recommendations to slightly over fill for better protection.

Thank you Geert.

Yes,

It is adviced by Harry Martens at limmen ( specialised in the citroen gearbox) to just poor in 3 quarts (bottles) of MT90. which I did.

In the case of the Castrol, I just put in 3l.

The manual ( S1 ) says 2,25l

Darren,

Do you have the workshop manual or parts manual?

These indicate the correct plug on the box you need to remove to get the levels right. There are 2 plugs on your box. Important to get the correct one. you can then fill to this, replace plug and then overfill as much as you desire.

Hello simon

Yes I do have a workshop manual. Ill have a look. I'll be honest I didn't know there was two plugs. Yes need to get the correct one. Don't want to get it wrong and get the level wrong.

Thanks, Darren

Simon

Just looked at the workshop manual and it says the higher one is a blanking plug (do not remove) and the lower one is the level plug. Does that sound right to you? Both on left side of the box. (Looking from the back of the car)

Darren.

If that's what the manual says, it's right :)

I put 3L instead of 2.25L into my S1 and when I jacked the back up it peed out all over the floor!

Seems wrong - too low - but thats the one.

It will be interesting to see what comes out!

Yes simon that's right!

I'm wondering what will come out when I drain it seeing as it hasn't been done for some time, and yes when you look at a diagram it looks like the gearbox holds no more than a thimble full, lol. Can't get any oil locally so I'll get it on line, so it's a job for next weekend now.

Thanks again for your help and everyone else on TLF

Darren.

Ps, will let you know how it goes, and what I find.

Hello Paul

Oh dear that's not good! I will over fill a bit because that seems a good idea for some extra protection. But a worry if it can pee out if jacked up.

Darren.

Exactly,

I am driving around for 4 years now, with about 3 quarts or 3l in the gearbox. It never spilled.

My gearbox was done by Harry, so I spoke to the man and it is he who sold me the 3 quarts of Redline MT90 and told me to put it all in. So no need to email him, unless he has changed his mind since then.

But I can see Harry is on line in this topic, so may be he can confirm.

Just put in 3l. Level will raise maybe 1cm or less but the oil will be worked up towards 5th gear much better.

Hi Harry. I have followed you info about putting 3l in. I have had a slight leak around the speedo drive. If I were now to check my dip stick where would 3L come?

Hi Buddsy,

imho the level with 3l will be only one cm higher than the level plug at the side of gearbox. Problem you Esprit guys are facing with small leaks coming from speedo drive is imho because of opposite rotation of engine and gearbox. The gears from 5th throw/spray the oil against  the nylon bushing.

You might need to clean that area good and add some sealant.

Well my o rings were split. They are quite a big o ring with a tiny cross section 2 mm I think. May well be more about what you have said though.

Thanks for you info.

Hi everyone

Here's one for you all, and sorry if this sounds a stupid question. What size are the sump, level and filler nuts on the

Citroen gearbox. (C35 type, 1984 on revised version) as lotus service notes state. Don't want to round them off.

Thanks Darren.
