Its not supposed to be set at idle, its set at 28 degrees at 3500-4000 RPM on UK pre-87.

From what I have read, the confusion on ignition timing specs for the Lotus 9xx series engines hinges upon semantics, the limitations of clarity when English is used in more than one way to describe a

That might have been for later cars as the S1 and S2 had vacuum retard for emissions.  vr Mike

That's (retard timing) was only for idling emissions. Running timing was kind of conventional. The table setting out the specifications looked deceptively Excel like. 😎

Thanks for that.

Last time I set it I used the strobe and set it at idle. I then ran it up to 4000 rpm and it had advance to the 28 as described.

Im hoping it will do the same this time.

Im glad it says 12 BTC. Last night off the top of my head I was aiming for 11 but each time I tightened the screw it crept up to 12.

I thought Id check the proper value and adjust more carefully tonight...

Correct ignition timing at 4000rpm is more important. That’s where most damage is likely to be done.
