Bought an '89 Esprit Turbo. Is it an 'S' model?

Recommended Posts

I have been gone from the forum for way too long. I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but In addition to my '85 Esprit Turbo, I picked up an '89 that has all the SE bodywork but no chargecooler. The bodywork and engine appear to be factory with no tacked on pieces or removal of the chargecooler. The VIN indicates it is not an SE nor does it have the SE on the number plate under the bonnet.

I understand that there was a very limited number of 'S' models built. I need to know how to identify this particular Esprit. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The S didn't have SE bodywork, it had different side skirts and front lower valence.

The S had the scalloped side skirts with the shorter scoop than the SE. the lower edge of the SE side skirt is straight.

What part of the world are you in?  The USA had the 89 with the GM injection.  The European S was basically the same, but included the SE's rear 16" wheels.

Hi Travis,

Thanks for the info. I will look at it in the morning and compare the bodywork.

I'm wondering if anyone here has pics of an 'S' model to compare to.

I forgot. I'm in Upstate New York about 15 miles from Watkins Glen. Also didn't note the link, looks like great info. Reviewing it now.

So the S had the exhaust on the left, the 89 SE had the exhaust on the right.

This S has the same rear style valence as the SE, except for the exhaust side.

Notice the lower side scoops.

This is the SE

Oh if you are in the USA... then there was only the 89 (non-SE) and the SE.

So your's is an 89 (non-SE) most likely.

The European S looks like the USA 89 (non-SE), except for the 16" rear wheels, the USA version had 15" wheels.

Is there a way to prove or disprove with the VIN? Mine has a wing like the US SE. Perhaps not factory?

It looks exactly like the red one in the 2nd pic except it has a wing that attaches to the outer edges of the rear fenders. Maybe an S4 wing added??

I will look into getting a certificate of provenance. It's a great idea to have regardless.

Thanks!

The USA 89 VIN started with Esprit Turbo (M.P.F.I.); USA      F - 2500

The SE VIN 82/F – 5000  May '89

So if the last 4 digits of your VIN are 2xxx, then it is an 89

if the last 4 digits of the VIN are 5xxx, then it is an SE.

I'm with Travis. It would be a wing as shown in his photo.

The S4 wing is a thing of beauty that attaches to the tailgate about halfway up.

Looks very nice!

The rear wing is from an SE, and not standard I believe.

You may be right, Barry, but...

I'm afraid the same site shows only 1 esprit s3 on the road as well, which I'm fairly sure is just a few examples too low...

Still a bit rare though :-))

The Esprit S is very rare in this country, unlike the S3 (relatively speaking). With such low production numbers, Barry's car is indeed a very rare derivative.

The esprit series 3 are nearly all just logged as esprit on the v5 - hence the difference. I don't think the computer records existed or were at all accurate at that point.

Off to do those window frames today - and pretreat the leather before my recolouring kit comes........

Once that satin blacks dry - she's out for a run....

I just wonder if the rarity will increase the value of her. Would sure help in the up step to v8.......

Hi Barry Not sure why I thought your car was an SE but isnt it a carb turbo, in which case  I have seen a few of those including mine. They often get registered as S3 or S4. But what is the difference on the S model.

No carbs on this one - it's got the delco injection system. No charge cooler on her. 228bhp so a bit more than a normal turbo - but less than the se

Abs and non working air-con!
