Input Shaft play

Recommended Posts

Managed to separate gearbox from the car - that was a fun job!

I noticed that there was quite a bit of play with the input shaft. Is this normal?

This is the first time I've done anything with the clutch/gearbox so no idea what's normal and what's not.

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

Thanks,

Pete

Hi, a little play is ok. Moving up and down a bit. You should not feel play when rotating the input shaft forward and backwards.

It should stay inside primairy shaft aswell.

cheers

Thank you Harry. Yes there is a little play up and down but none when turned or forwards/backwards. When pushing the shaft into the gearbox against the spring it only goes in 5-6mm. Is that normal?

Hi Pete/ Harry,

when you say "up and down", do you mean axial play?

The movement in mine was also worrying me, around 4mm in total, up, down side to side, as you are looking at the shaft end-on. Reading other posts I believe it is ok. But confirmation would be nice.

Will check other planes of movement when next up North.

Thanks, Dave

Hi, the part of input shaft going into primairy shaft is a actually a small part of a circkel diameter 20 m approx.

It is a little round. I hope you understand what I mean. That is why there is some movement.

That sounds about right Dave. I guess that when the 'box is bolted back onto the engine, the shaft is then supported at the crank end so the play is irrelevant.

Can anyone confirm how much fore/aft movemenmt there should be on the input shaft against the spring behind the bell housing. Want to avoid removing it if possible. Currently if I push with my hand the shaft goes back 5mm or so.

Thanks,

Pete
