jetfixr123 Posted December 16, 2006 Report Share Posted December 16, 2006 Well, today I installed the *Red Race ECU* from Johan Hybinette......I have straight pipes, K/N's and now this mod on my '02 V8. I have owned numerous exotic cars and for the money I will tell you there really is no ZO6, Viper, or Lambo that would get my attention as far as bang for the buck.....This car is simply in a different league now, it is absolutely not the same car. By the way, I have zero fear about the gearbox. If you "feather" the throttle in first and second I see no mechanical strain. I have new F1's on the rear and it simply sends them ablaze if you want to be that wild...Point being that the theory is correct, something does give----the rubber. If you made it stick and you want a dragster yes, the gearbox would probably go out the back end. If that's what your after buy a Nova with a big block....If you like jet type thrust on the fly, this is for you. Johan, did a fantastic job. Turn around was 1 day and he delivered everything promised. I thought I'd share this as many people posted questions about adding HP in the past, I reviewed them all and made this decision. I believe Matt Monet truly knew and proved this car had serious potential, now I know first hand. As many of you know Johan can be reached at Extremeesprit.com Many of my other components were purchased from Jeff at JAE. Both are top notch folks and have made this car pleasant to own! In addition to your mods, I also have upgraded wastegates and a Blitz boost controller. I'm considering Matt's turbos now. The esprit I own has some mods such as Johan's ECU in it and I have blown a primary shaft/driveshaft so far.. basically what I have been doing now is essentially no hard acceleration in 1st at all, and waiting until 2nd to really get on it.. by feathering do you mean slowly putting the pedal to the metal? do you even floor it in 1st? If you have ever driven a Noble M400 that's the best expression I can give. I try to mechanically feel the boost come on and keep it low until established with traction and on a roll. I just avoid 1st gear now.. take off from 2nd I think that any car that has been 'tracked' in its past is a form of abuse...no matter how well the prior owner kept up on the maintenance. Racing on a track subjects a car to stress that it likely never encounters on the street unless a person is driving around like a complete maniac continuously. Transmission, engine, brakes, cooling system, suspension are all taken to the limit. If you have other drivetrain failures I won't be surprised. A car that is tracked often is living a hard life, and stuff just breaks in a racing environment. The stress parts undergo is increased while 'track' driving. Engine is constantly at full throttle, transmission under full load both physically and thermally. While I am sure the prior owner took excellent care of the car, I think you can chalk up your failure to previous track use, an aftermarket ECU, or possibly material defect in the driveshaft. Have to agree that both Johan and Jeff are top notch folk - I have used and lauded their services in the past. Intercooling is expensive and a PIA to install. Nevertheless, the difference in thrust is impressive. I do not think that tracking a car such as the Esprit is a form of abuse, in fact I think just the opposite - I thought they were designed and built to be driven. Certain parts are made to wear - brakes, rotors, clutches, tires, shocks, bearings, bushings, etc. - and yes, the harder one drives the quicker they wear. So what? You replace those items as they wear AND you perform proper maintainance simultaneously. I guess the only other reason to have a car like this is to impress someone else - not my cup of coffee. I hunt with my rifles, track my Lotus and off-road my Jeep (and soon in my H3). To the collectors and admirers I say "I am glad you enjoy your toys in a way that makes you happy. Don't criticize me or anyone else for using those toys in a way that the designers intended." Jetfxr123 - if you happen to be in the Tri-State area in the Spring, shoot me an email and we'll hit NHIS, or LRP or WGI (my favorite) and you will get to enjoy your Esprit safely and closer to it's limits - and THAT is amazing.
