Getting started on my Excel Resto

Recommended Posts

So, the car arrived today. So far the list of work I can see as follows:

1. Engine running "rough" almost sounds like it's ticking over on 3 cylinders but when you rev it it clears up. It also isn't converted for Unleaded!

2. Hole in exhaust

3. None of the door controls work

4. clutch is right at the top of the pedal

5. Rev COunter not working

6. Tyres too big and rubbing on wheel arch

7. Drivers seat very poor, ripped and not comfortable ( foam has prob degenerated)

8. Non standard facia

9. Rear O/S Window coming away

10. Wet in passengers footwell.

So Questions for you good people! Numbers relate to the above issues.

1. Any idea's? Car had a Cam Belt service a year ago, but it cost £217.....don't think that's a good one do you? How much to convert the car to run on unleaded? Or can't they? Is it cheaper just to keep buying lead replacement?

2. Any cheaper options that not only sound good but will be cheaper than the £800 I expect to pay for a genuine one?

3. I know nothing about electrics but none of them work, period. Totally dead.

4. Any idea how much for a new Clutch?

5. Cable?

6. New tyres needed, 215's preferably. Had some advice on this. ANyone have any links to companies who are selling them?

7. Going to see Fulchers over this. They are the experts and (hopefully) will look after me on the price!

8. I heard Lotus have the wood facia's in stock. Is this a simple fit? Is it glued on?

9. Will let a glass company have a look at this.

10. I am told by the old man that this was a design fault and that the water comes in via the air vent which in turn is linked to the vent at the top of the bonnet. Normally due to the drains getting blocked.

Any addresses of places I can buy parts etc is greatly appreciated. Especially if I can save money on the Clutch and Exhaust!

It doesn't need to be converted for unleaded. It is fine to tun it on unleaded - Aluminium engine.

Pick up phone. Speak with specialist mechanic. Pay him/her when the car is fixed.

Hi Barry, Windows, mirrors, none of them work.

Yes Graham, but I want to save money where possible by buying the parts.

Seems strange it all doesn't work.......that's multiple different feeds from different fuses.

My bet would be they are disconnected inside the door - that's the first check

Use super plus or what ever the high octaine rated unleaded is and you will be fine.

You might get a 2nd hand stainless from Lotusbits or Tocus.   I think he broke my old se that made its way over the water and that had a stainless system on it ( over a year ago he had it though).  You do sometimes see them on ebay in mild BUT there were 2 down pipes used so get the right one.  Or get a whole system made up, there are loads of specialists who will make and fit you one over a few days.    Look after the manifold as they do crack ( same as on the n/a hc esprit) and now they are going up in price due to rarity.

Why  look at the big picture when I can actually do something myslef. Anyone know where I can get an original gear lever knob and the cap for the centre of my alloys?

1. Unleaded is good to go already.

3. Take the door cards off & check. You need to undo the screen in the door handle to do this as well as the screws round the outside. You should have central locking as well. Mine goes to GST on Saturday where my central locking will be foxed or replaced.

6. Tyres - I've got 205/55s on mine. I've got these on mine from Pneus Online, they deliver within a week,

7. I'm going to visit David Reid in Great Moulton the following week to see what he can do about my carpets, and also to discuss a retrim of the cloth. I'll let you know how it goes.

8 Looks screwed on according to the parts manual via LotusExcel.net

10. I think water can also come in via at the join at the top of the window/body. A PO has mastic'd mine up, and mine is as dry as a bone.

LotusBits do a replacement gear knob - here

That's exactly what I replaced my ac delco controller unit with.

You only need to swap the controller - and it will all work.

If you want a photo - can grab one tomorrow and note down the wiring colours - got the book with it scribbled on in the glove box

I'd be tempted to take all the fuses out, check and clean. There seems to be alot of electrics on different circuits not working. Also check all the earthpoints. The main battery earth to chassis (near the drivers side rear wheel) would be a good place to start.

1. Engine running "rough" almost sounds like it's ticking over on 3 cylinders but when you rev it it clears up. It also isn't converted for Unleaded!.  carbs sounds like they need a service. Kit is about £80.

2. Hole in exhaust. I have 2 rear box's you can have FOC

3. None of the door controls work, as previously suggested, check the fuse box.

4. clutch is right at the top of the pedal. I have a very good very low mileage used one, special price to you.

5. Rev COunter not working, Again electronic, I am sure it's not cable, more electrical gremlins.

6. Tyres too big and rubbing on wheel arch. Cant help

7. Drivers seat very poor, ripped and not comfortable ( foam has prob degenerated). I have a complete Eclat S2 interior in leather, it's an option for you.

8. Non standard facia. Can be picked up cheap from Lotus bits, only held on by sticky plastic things like velcro.

9. Rear O/S Window coming away. Pull of carefully, clean surfaces and stick back on with Tiger seal.

10. Wet in passengers footwell. Go and clean the drain holes.

Now smile, just saved you a fortune.

I have just...me personally....just me!!!! removed the washers, cleaned the bottle, unblocked the pipes and reconnected the pump (which is why it wasn't working! I did that.... I AM A MECHANICAL GOD!

Now lets strip the door panel off.
