Dented bonnet mesh - Interior/Exterior/Lights/Glass/Alarms/ICE/HVAC/Other - The Lotus Forums Jump to content

Someone has leant on/dented my bonnet mesh panels (ARRRRGHHH!!).

They're not too bad and i reckon i may be able to 'pull' them up with a coat hanger or something, but does anyone know how hard these are to change?? I have a horrible feeling you have to get the front bodywork off first.

Only noticed this today so haven't had a chance to have a proper nose. Also, this may be covered elsewhere, but couldn't find anything when searching.

I think it is clam off I'm afraid.

One of mine is dented and I haven't really found what I'm looking for to pull it back up. If you use metal there is a very real risk of cracking the paint off so it needs some sort of plastic hook and slow gentle work.

I've heard of a case where the mesh had become detached on one edge, which was a clam-off job to sort.  I believe they're stuck to the clam with an adhesive, so even if you could get to the back of the clam with it in place they need to be cut out and re-stuck.

Some of the crash repair specialists have a collection of odd-looking tools for dent pulling on metal-skinned cars and may be able to help.  ChipsAway do mobile dent repairs.

What about fishing line, you could thread it down and back up a few holes over.

This would allow you to target the pulling pressure.

Thanks for the help chaps. Shame Lotus didn't make this an easier fix, but oh well. I'll have a go at this myself, and by that i mean i'll cock it up then pay someone to do it properly.

It is a clam off job for sure if replacing I'm afraid.  My first car did suffer this at the hands of somebody else but then the clam was coming off for something else anyway.

The (wire) coat hanger works or I have used a tie wrap as easy to thread and then still strong enough to pull with Mole/Vise grips.

Someone posted about this on the US board.  IIRC they used fishing line to pull out the dent.
