Lowering the upper steering column Elcat – Excel pre MY86

Recommended Posts

Did anybody made this in the past already?

One thing beside the bigbore exhaust I really miss from my MY89 Excel is the tilting upper steering column. It is not that much of change needed, but it is not perfect at the moment. There are two sides: with the existing position it is complete impossible to watch the most important instrument – the water temp. And of course the steering itself could be improved with a better angle.

So far I have recognised the following challenges:

- If you use some more washers between the mounting plate of the column and the dashboard the steering lock has to be turned

- Down the column a washer solution is needed between the fixing points to the bulkhead and column to avoid stress from the body

- perhaps the fasteners of the universal joints has to be readjusted because more travel towards the bulkhead is needed

Is anything more involved?

Thanks for your replys in advance

Kind regards

Don
