Boot/Engine Panel Gap

Recommended Posts

Whilst washing the car for the first time last night, I spotted that there was a gap between the boot and the roof of the car, through which you can see the engine. There also appears to be no seal of any type in that area.

Is that normal (for cooling purposes) or not? I have attached a rather crappy photo, but hopefully you can see what I mean.

As everything in a Lotus, that gap is adjustable. Your's seems to be at the wide end of things.

A seal is not foreseen here.

The only seal in that area is around the boot aperture. I'd imagine adjusting the lid is very easy, just slackening the bolts on the hinge and moving. Probably easier with 2 people though, 1 to support the lid and 1 to make the adjustments.

Also, don't make the gap too small....

Else it may not clear when you open the boot and I understand there are a few scratched/broken sailfins (the black part with grills) where bootlids don't have sufficient clearance.

I had my car back from an official Lotus dealership recently having had the back end taken apart and it was returned with an absolutely massive gap all the way around the top and sides of the boot.  Sitting in the back seat I could see out through the gap. It's back with them to resolve.

It would be interesting to know if you get more or less rain water trickling down the rear internal window after you've had it adjusted...

Im sure a specialist will have a safe technique to adjust it... Probably really simple but better safe than sorry. Coco implied it might crunch if too close... Not worth the risk damaging that lid. Dread to think what it might cost if the engine lid alone is close to a grand!

Its easy enough to adjust but as I said the boot lock takes ages. You set it, it works, 10 mins later it doesnt etc Took me as long to get the latch to work smoothly as it did to adjust the hatch. There are bolts betweeen the hinge and hatch, and hinge and bulkhead, thats it.
