Shortening the shifter height

Recommended Posts

I'd like to shorten my shifter a 1/2" and wondered if there is a specific procedure once the gearshift is out (currently rebuilding my master gearshift assembly).

Just feel like it sits a little high ....

Yes it's been done.

You have to cut the shifter rod, and cut and reweld the reverse pullup tube.

Not so easy on a '93, the shifter stalk is a very different design. I suppose you could change it to the earlier design, but most of the shifter assembly would have to be replaced. I think I still have most of the bits, as I changed mine to the '93 version.

Oh yeah... I didn't know that change was on the 93, but I have peeked in the '91 X180-R and saw that the reverse inhibitor design was different. BTW the cover over the chassis and shifter is glued in the X180-R, no way to easily service the shifter at all!

I chopped mine 7/8"

on the 90 SE it has to be re-welded as Travis states.

be aware that you lose leverage and shift effort is somewhat

higher, maybe not noticable at first

I believe Karl-Franz of EFF shortened the shifter on his S4s.

Yes, mine looks very different from the early 90's style. It almost looks like it would require serious disassembly as well as welding....
