Rum

Recommended Posts

I know Bibs likes his rum and the ale thread does well so I thought Id share this with those interested!

Ive been getting really into the spiced rums so far Kraken followed by sailor Jerry have been my favourites. The captain Morgan is cheap but not very spiced to my tastes. Also some of them seem to drop in alcohol. The Lambs spiced rum drops to 30% where most are 35%

Well I was going to op for sailor jerry which is £20.00. Bicardi Oaken heart is pretty nice I thin 35% for £17.00. Then I saw they (Tesco) had a red Bicardi spiced rum for £14.00 which was 40%. Well I hummed and hared for a rare ole time but in the end went for it.

Man this is the best stuff I have tried! Almost too nice. Thick it feels almost syrupy but nice even nice to neck neat!

Been out of Kraken for a little while, but am a fan. Got my 'go to' Havana Club 7yo in rotation at the moment, and for 'special ocassions' (ok, every few weeks)' I break out the 15yo El Dorado I brought back from Guyana this February (home of the Demerara river). My mum got the 21yo, but the 15 has a rounder sweetness I reckon. I highly recommended it.

^it's a good rum, but not gravity defying. Sorry about that (iOS photo glitch)

For years I couldn't drink Rum thanks to an under-age flirtation with the drink, which resulted in even the smell causing that hot metallic saliva feeling at the back of your jaw ... I'll stop there, but you get the picture...

Thankfully this has now passed, and whilst I enjoy Kraken (as a base for cocktails), I'm finding my way back to some great classic style rums.

These two are currently rocking my world:

OK, so the Penny Blue is all gone - but there's a damn good reason for that!

Im sure there are plenty of nice Rums worth savoring but that Red Bicardi for £14.00 is worth a shot...if you like spiced rum.

best Bottle (and my fave) was Ron Zacapa Guatemalan Gran Reserve. Amazing stuff.

I use these guys to buy specialist stuff I can't find in the shops. Sent Bibbo a selection last year so I'm sure he can tell you what they were and if they were any good.

Im thinking of maybe merging this with the Gin thread and renaming it Spirits as I want to talk about Tequila!

Well I like Tequila but have only tried the silver how does the gold differ? Also I want to try Mezcal. Anyone tried it?

Funnily enough I was just thinking the same thing.

Ale

Gin

Rum

Whiskey

For a bunch of people that drive a lot I think we have an issue

I saw this clicky today and thought of you drunkards guys. It's a BBC article about a legendary rum from the 50's/60's called "Rude to Your Parents".  :hrhr:

Short Story.. We were sent to the Marina at Atlantis on New Providence in the Bahamas, by the owners of the boat I was running for Christmas and the New Year. The boat went under the name of P.I.Sugar.... because the guy had made his first $10mil on Philippines Islands Sugar.  After sorting out all the usual stuff, we went over the road to 'Anthony's Bar and Grill 'for a snifter. after checking out the cocktail menu, we saw they had a drink call a P.I. Express. This, the 11 crew and I decided, was the drink for us. Our drinks were served up by a charming local girl, in a tall glass, complete with fruit, sugared rims and cocktail umbrellas. Oh how they just slipped down to perfection on a tropical evening.  The general, impression was of a fruity drink with a hint of rum. After the usual barstool talk and accompanying  sailor's bullsh1t, we decided to have a second round. Same again, absolutely the thing to have..... until we decided to get back to the boat, at which point there seemed to be a problem with our collective efforts at locomotion and coordination.... A further check of the drinks menu revealed that the P.I. Express was made with Bacardi 151, Bacardi Gold and Bacardi white, topped of with a bit of pineapple juice and orange juice. Fab drink, but a bit depilating !!.....Always had a fondness for rum though.

So how does white rum taste? Ive never tried it. Is it just the colour or is it different?

I generally find white (clear) runs have more of a harsher taste and generally aren't sippers but more of cocktail ingredients. Found some nice flavoured ones though, Koko Kanu is particularly nice although in essence is a posh Malibu!
