PNM larger disks...

Recommended Posts

The 321mm diameter x 30mm wide set.

Question on how much material you had to butcher off the pads ?

I've just gone to fit mine and found out they wont fit, the caliper (standard S4/S4s/GT3/V8 rear brembo) has 24 mm width between the material so 3mm off each should make it fit, however the caliper doesn't have anywhere near the span to get an even pad width on each side (the bracket is fitted correctly)

The outer pad has to lose all of the 6mm whilst the inner losses none...really not happy with it.

It's as if the disk itself is too far away from the hub, it doesn't sit central to the caliper even with it floating as far out as possible. I winder if this is becuase the car has SE hub carriers but they look identical (and some SE owners have fitted them I am sure).

Unless I can get a work around on this they're going to be up for sale if anyone wants a set, they are the grooved Imola versions.

Yes I should have test fitted them months ago but there ya go...

Fast becomng a very frustrating project :angry:

I have them on my car with no problems. So does Alan Croft, he fitted his last week, why don't you ask him for some assitance?

As for pads, the Esprit pads has more material on. You have to shave a bit off them. If you went for an Elise pad then these are the same but thinner (so someone told me).

Something's not right with your set-up. You need to check the bracket and you may need to put a washer in there to space the caliper inline with disc. I didn't have this problem with mine so Iam a bit lost. I also had the same discs fitted to my S4s.

I'll see if I have some pics to email you.

Tar Mate - I appreciate people HAVE fitted them (I believe Pitstop Pete has on his SE).

Everything is going wrong atm

I initially thought the calipers were wrong but they are the same p/n as the ones on the GT3

Gapping the bracket might help, although it's pretty close atm, would take pics myself but I've taken it all apart and dropped it back on the wheels now.

Hi Jon,

On the turbo the fitted really easily but then I have the monster sixes on that at the mo (although they may get moved to the v8).

I've only just fitted the disc and bell kit to the v8. Apart from filing off the tab bit on the caliper as per the pnm instructions and taking a little off a screw head they fitted again no problems. Are the brackets/hubs the same on the se as the gt3/s4/s and v8. I seem to recall they might be different on the se which might lead to a difference in the caliper spacing??

As dave says the pads need a little off if they are brand new (mine are slightly worn so I got away with it).

Can you take some pics?? Might be able to suggest more then??

Cheers

Alan,

Are you talking about the fronts? I think Jonathon is having problems with his rears. You have the big discs fitted on the rear of your 89 turbo with the little Brembo caliper on. Jonathon is doing the same as you did on your white car by fitting a Brembo rear calipers and big disc kit. Did you have any problems with this?

You have also fitted the discs and bells to your V8 haven't you?

I think Jonathon is having problems with his rears.

LOL, glad you added the 's' onto rear.

Looking at :

004.jpg

They do seem OK but the visible pad is probably 1/2 the material left.

The prob I am seeing is that I'd have to lose 2/3 the material on the outer pad and retain the inner to it's original thickness, and even there the caliper is still pulled very hard across - there is some risk to damaging the bellow seals not to mention it'll resist relaxing and you'll get un-even pull on the caliper

Something's not right, I might take another look today.

Moving the bracket in might help but again it'll only safely go about 1mm.

Hopefully this might be a bit inconseqential as I hope to be getting some AP calipers on the back then I can demote the floating caliper to hand brake only, mill these pad down to a low level and be done with it. It's a heavy overkill but if you lose hydraulics on the track you do want something on the emergency brake to slow you somewhat

jon. this was a while back 4 me but, i used the washers from the std. attachment bolts to space the braket off, iirc. that gets it centralised iirc!, then skimmed the laguna pads down plenty so they fitted evenly. the elise pads that came with my ebay calipers cleaned up in the lathe well, and still fit, but a bit thinner, and there FF compound, as std. factors laguna pads are not much better compound than running metal to metal it turns out.

have fun

i don't seem to recall having any problems with the rears. I did have to space the bolt out a little more but that is all.

Seems a bit odd. I agree with the others in that spacing it caliper a touch might be enough.

Jonathan

I fitted the large rear discs on my 89 non-SE a couple of months ago and faced the same problem as you describe.

You need a washer to offset the caliper slightly. I got washers together with the kit from PNM.

I also removed the thin metal plate on the rear side of the pads and shaved of some pad material according to PNM's instruction. Mind you, removing material from the pad was a nightmare as I had to take off approximately 2mm from every pad...

The brakes work fine now.
