Again, I'm not asking to revoke the 2nd amendment -

Why not? It's just some words some people said a long time ago when as you say, things were different. The world won't end if you don't have guns, quite the opposite in fact for a lot of people!

Bibs,

We have 5 million registered NRA members and those are the only ones we can verify.  There are most likely a million or so unregistered owners.  Many NRA owners consider their weapons like an arm or leg.  They are that devoted and you are crossing sacred ground to them.  Imagine if you were told that you can't drive your Evoras anymore?  You have your toys and they have theirs.  They are NOT going to give them up easily after almost a quarter century.  Your toy doesn't typically kill people unless your intoxicated and it has not been stolen.  That turns almost any car into a weapon.

I'm guessing we have tens of millions of guns.  That's a lot of clean up.

I agree that if they were gone, then it would be a lot simpler.  Realistically, it will take a radical movement for that to happen.  IF I marched down the street with a sign stating revoke the 2nd amendment, I would have a high chance of being murdered depending upon what city I chose.  I would really love to see the Chicago murder drop since I'm only 60 miles from the city.

Just like we need to reduce our carbon footprint.  We can't just easily state - stop fossil fuels now.  It would through the world economy into chaos.  Granted that's a drastic example, but eventually Oil will be phased out so it doesn't bankrupt billions and possibly trillions of dollar industries and obsolete close to a million jobs.

I wish it could be like cigarettes when I was in California.  Everyone thought that it would cause panic.  What happened?  People started going outside of businesses to smoke.  Suddenly, non-smokers started to show up at restaurants that would have NEVER considered going before that time.  Indiana is the home of discounted cigarettes and illegal fireworks.  It's taken Indiana a long time to comply with non-smoking, but some of these smokers will smoke where your eyeball would freeze in less than 10 seconds.  But we still sell Disneyland type grenade launched fireworks, that one is going to take a bit longer to get over.

IF we stated pull the guns now, we could be asking for a Wild West Showdown.  I hear rifles being shot around my house all the time.  We had a dog agility event at a farm that had target practice the next farm across, but with semi automatic weapons.  The dogs (all of them) were frightened due to these guns.  It was a big dog event, but these gun owners didn't care that they were frightening our dogs.  We couldn't argue with them since they had enough fire power to level a full street block.  Sometimes, you get that "thug" mentality instead of the professional/responsible owners.

I completely understand where you are coming from Bibs.  I want to live in a Star Trek world, too.

Okay, so you ban semi-automatic assault rifles, then the shooter would have just bought an semi-automatic shotgun, on-and-on.  Bottom line, we need keep all weapons out of the hands of the mentally distributed.  Maybe there should be a psychological evaluation as part of the background check.

We banned all auto and semi auto weapons, which obviously includes handguns and shotguns.  We (Australians) are now limited to single shot weapons, which I suppose is what the US second amendment was written about / for.

Yep, so we update the 2nd amendment to reflect the current times instead of musket times.  Since the NRA donated $31 million to Trumps campaign, they are going to fight this one hard just as much as the previous shootings.  If you ever watched the Matrix movie, it's like the scene where they explain to Neo that everyone that has faced an Agent (the NRA) has died (in this case legislation).  Sandy Hook, the NRA won again with multiple children dead.  The Vegas shooting, the NRA won again - lots more dead.  The reason why Parkland is different is because the high school kids can use social media and organize quickly.  They also hit the media head on with no delays so no one would forget.  It wasn't TOO soon for them to talk.  This is why I admire the shaved head girl and all students who questioned why this happened.  There was another girl who was hit with shrapnel wounds to her face and was interviewed with CNN with fresh wounds still not healed.  Trump called her in the hospital and said, "I hear you're a big fan of mine and I'm a big fan of yours."  She wasn't a fan.  She described him as expressing no empathy and she was not comforted by the call.  Isn't that sad. A basic skill that every President or adult should possess in this kind of situation, but unable to fathom.  These are kids. Kids and different groups are attacking them when they have already been through hell.  A 14 year old victim of Parkland had to send a message to Melania Trump (who promised to go after Cyber Bullies) to be reminded by this 14 year old to have Donald Trump Jr. stop attacking her via social media.  This 14 year old has received several threats- is that right?  She's 14!

I heard it on NPR.  Trump talked about Trump and Turnbull talked about Trump.  Expected result.

If say there is a gun fireing event happening close to the dog rallye close by, any person with a right mind, would walk over to the dog rallye representative and have a peacefull talk and find a propper solution. If not, anyone fireing their guns should have their weapons taken by the police and Loose their right to have weapons. Why? Because you cannot argue against a gun. A person trying to talk to a gunowner, will never ever be safe. If a debate turns into an argue and escalate further, that gun owner will per definition ultimately use his or her fun as Means to "win" the debate/argue, physicaly or mentally. In either case, it's still a misuse of force.

In the back of ones mind there will always be the chance of remembering having a gun ready to fire, where as the mindset of someone not having a gun, will think of other solutions, eg. flee, talk it through etc.

It seems very clear indeed, that a man like Donald Trump and his Family are prone to be watched by nearly everyone in the US in a situation like this because of his office. He and his Family, especially as he has drawn some of them into politics close to his office, should and must be very observant to that position. Therefore it is so much more discouraging that they have no sense of their responsability and show and express that empathy, that every child learns within the forst six months of their lifes. To them, it seems, it's all just a tv-show. "You're fired!" or in this case: "Bang, you're dead!"

Sad sad people.

Kind regards,

Jacques

We don't need a fantasy universe to make sensible gun laws.  We need sensible leaders and policy.  That's not a science fiction wet dream, it's a rethink of how money and politics are intertwined, or put another way, starting by making the Citizens United SCOTUS ruling and our outrageous gerrymandered districts obsolete, then moving on from there.  Rethinking our policies about gun control isn't a minority position. I know plenty of gun owners who are in favor of stricter controls, and what does it say about a culture that neighbors are afraid to talk to one another because one of the parties is armed?  It's time to shake ourselves awake.

Agreed.  Unfortunately, our current leader spouts nonsense most of the time.  The NRA loves and hates him. The hate was when he suggested the age limit change from 18 to 21.  The love is the 80 minute rhetoric session at his recent conference in which he promoted guns in the classroom.  The NRA just loved the thought of "more" guns.  The NRA and Trump have one dangerous common goal - more power!  We don't need billionaire power trippers in government.  Of course I don't know if he's a billionaire since he won't release his taxes.  When one organization can easily give tens of millions of dollars away for a "single" campaign such as the NRA, that's a sign that the organization doing so has too much power.

Jim Jeffries may be a comedian but he puts this across well! Australia managed it, it's not impossible. People don't need guns personally, they need to be reserved for soldiers and other professions that need them. You don't need the means to kill someone when you walk down the street.

A comment on the thread:  Why do we have to come to a British hosted forum to hear sensible talk about gun control from all of the participants ? Don't answer that!  I know why. It's because we're Lotus lovers  thus again proving that owning a Lotus makes you a wiser, happier and altogether better person!

Dump Trump in 2018 (a thrilling idea but too good to be true).  At the least it would be such a relief to eviscerate him and his party in the midterms.   We can't undo the harm already done, but we can take the first steps towards recovering some of the lofty ideals that are supposed to guide us.  It's time for American exceptionalism to take a hike so we can deal honestly with the reality of who we are.

Agreed.  Dump Trump 2018.  How can he stay in office when the Aussie PM stepped down due to harassment allegations.  He's got 19 women claiming harassment, 1 porn star pay off of $130k, 1 Playboy Playmate affair (that we know of), and the video explaining that he enjoys assaulting women.  And this is just the women that he's pissing off.  No other God I hate saying it "President" has received this amount of news coverage.  Everyday, he makes his presence known because he's a look at me type.  Our cars are look at me cars, BUT most of us drive them because they are great performance cars and it doesn't matter what others think.  If people like our cars, great we will tell them stories and treat them respectfully.  If they don't like them,  they can go buy another car because it doesn't bother me.  We don't purposely go out driving our cars with the absolute sole intention of "LOOK AT ME".  In fact, most of the time I wish they wouldn't notice the car at all.  But Trump is all about holding the spotlight on himself for as long as possible.  The sad part is that he gets off on it.  The more the better.  I'm sure many Lotus car owner are just trying to get by and live decent lives while trying not to worry about what the next weird/wacked/dangerous thing this "LOOK AT ME" President will do.

As for the deputy who was scared and didn't go confront the murderer, can't blame him. Not when he's got what, a tiny pistol against somebody well in the zone, ready and shooting with the best of military killing weapons. Who would? Not Wayne LaPierre, Trump or the deputy's boss  Scott Israel I bet. Heros after the event those guys... meh.

Unbelievable, POTUS claims he'd be brave enough to run into the school shooting without a gun...

Jerk is very appropriate.  I think most people(without any training) who didn't know any of the staff/children would seriously think twice about entering a hostile shooting zone, with no weapons knowing their chances of survival are almost zero.  His mouth just keeps running and it's awful.  Again, sad.

Trump thinks he's a pro at the art of misdirection to keep moving the subject around to distract people. It's blatantly obvious to most what his game is, but some still stick with him if the end result preserves their toys. Bottom line is gun manufacturers own Congress via the NRA confusing the issue with the 2nd amendment (nothing is said about owning AR 15 is a right)

He is the distraction king.  I can't believe it's been a year and he's still in office.  Just when I think it can't get any worse - it does.  Even a reporter today said maybe he should do "less tweeting" and listen more.  I'm not thrilled with FedEx today either.  I recommend we all starting using UPS.  so FedEx will get the message that the NRA is not the way.

It really bothers me when he goes after Senator John McCain - even when he's terminally ill.  He said he would stop it, but he recently brought it right back up again.  What's next, does he go after the Florida students?  No wait, Donald Trump, Jr. is doing that for him.  How much more of his rhetoric can we take? Even his own daughter doesn't seem to agree with guns in the classroom and wants more discussion.  I find it hard that she doesn't believe or have serious doubts with her father concerning the sexual harassment complaints from those women.  Come on, 19 of them that have come forward.  I have a suspicion there are more.  If MeToo didn't happen, these 19 may have been silenced.

I'm glad my American compatriots all feel the same way I do.  It gives me hope.    I don't need a gun because all my neighbors have guns and I make sure to be on good terms with all my neighbors.

Trump  embarrassing for starters and then you only wish that's all he was.  You could convince yourself it wasn't so bad if it was only a little embarrassment.  I've been embarrassed many times and I can live with that!  But Trump is dangerous.

Since the guy was following his training and has been fired from his job (if I am correct?) I can now see the inevitable court case coming.

As for Trump, he is just trying to gain political kilometreage out of someone else's circumstance. Seems to be what he does all the time. A dab hand at misdirection.

There’s one for ‘ let’s get potas a purple heart’. And a few dark web pages for straight up erasure.

The CIA must be having a great time reading / funding these pages. :-)
