4 wheel re-alignment costs - Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Hubs/Steering/Geo - The Lotus Forums #ForTheOwners Jump to content

Hi all,

I've just been presented with a bill of £661 labor to complete a geometry check and make the necessary alterations by a well know independent lotus specialist. To be honest is double what I was expecting, the breakdown is below.

Set up the machine 1 hr
These were the rears (toe) needed adjustment 4.5 hrs.
Disconnect front suspension top ball joints, replace the worn mounting bolts and reassemble with selected shims for caster and camber 1.5 hrs
Carry out geometry check and adjust and make final checks 2 hrs

9.5 hrs @ £58 + VAT = £661

I'm really quite shocked at the hours spent on the car, is this normal?  As for I've rebuilt the front wishbones and its a 20 minute job to remove the wheel and and the two bolts before moving the shims in the relevant direction, the caster adjustment is again popping out the two shims and then putting it back together before putting the wheel back on. Not sure how long it would take to re-secure the alignment dish? but say 15mins.

The rears I'll admit are more problematic but as I understand it the V8 has split shims which means that the whole thing does not need stripping to fit them? if there is too much tow in then you unscrew the bolt and add another 1mm washer.

I asked them for a quote before hand which never materialized, but I did explain that the dealer had started the work before realizing that their test equipment was incorrect and out of calibration, I had agreement to take it back to the dealer to get redone so I was only really getting this company to do it because it saved me collecting and then taking to the other garage to get done.

What is your thoughts?

UK Sportscars? Ah, my local 'specialist'. Bargepole.

photos please - always good to share

^^^ What he said. Together we are strong. Share and dont be ashamed to do so. They certainly were not shy in pushing your bill to the max.   Buddsy

£35 at my local for set up on their brand new 'Supertracker' (4 wheel Laser/Camera) setup including adjusting front toe.   Your rear toe adjustment at 4.5 hours is a scandal if they just added or removed shims.  Actually takes no more than 30 mins a side.  If it included any remedial work (bushes etc) that would be a different matter.

Ooh - I would have though 180-200 Is more of a top end figure.

christ - that's efffing dear :censored:

its a job that shouldn't be started without the correct parts and shims for setting up allowing this to be done in a sensible timeframe

I had my Esprit done at Lakeside for £150+VAT and then my Elise at Lipscomb for a little less. Unless there was a LOT of extra work, that does sound very, very pricey.

I paid £40 to get my 4 wheel alignment checked by a specialist in Southampton.

There were just a couple of tweaks required on the front track rods.

The whole thing took no more than 45 mins...

Not worth starting anything now...🍺

The more I think about this, the more I am shocked. There is no way they can think this is reasonable.

Any decent Harage would have let you know it was going to cat more than £150 before doing the work. £150 I'd expect anyone to accept for alignment. But £662 is a rip off like £2000 to Tarmac your driveway is.

Thanks everyone,

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this is totally unreasonable. I had supplier a full set of shims so there should have been no delays.

Before and after in the attachment. Any suggestions on the best way to handle this?

Quick update.

There was limited negotiation with 3 hours being knocked off as a gesture of goodwill as the garage cited that they had already trimmed time off to get to the  9hrs?? I collected the car last week and drove it back to Paris, it certainly is much improved but I'm not sure it was really worth the price of £410 + the parts I supplied.I just wanted the car collected as the owner of the garage had said previouslty he wanted "rid of the car", this was out of the blue and instantly made me loose confidence in them. I had intended in getting other work down there ready for the winter but for obvious reasons this was now not going to happen

I'll be having a good look at the car and the work done this weekend and feedback but at this stage the work looks good with some nice addtions like fitting clips to hold the wire from the 02 sensors to the boot floor. However, at this stage I cannot recommend UK Sportscars as the level of communication, comments made, costs, etc. have as a customer made be loose faith in them.

It wasn't just the alignment there were other things that didn't make sense e.g. a £90 fuel bill for diagnostic of the misfire, road test and road testing the car after the wheel alignment. That's enough for me to drive to Paris from the Newcastle 500miles.?? As I said I just wanted the car as I was getting paranoid and didn't have the energy for further discussions on the matter.

Up to you all if you want to use them I'm just sharing my experience the good and the bad.
