Just how expensive?

Right, once again assistance required;

Car jacked up at the rear, in gear both rear wheels turn. One quicker than the other. apply some pressure (slow it down) on the drivers side and it will slow down infact I can stop it entirely. Something in the gearbox is surely not right, diff not working? some other part kaput? im guessing this is a box of and opened up to find out what is wrong... any pointers?

I'm pretty sure that's how an open diff works. If you spin a wheel by hand, does the other turn in the opposite direction?

That's a grand please :)

na, the rear passenger wheel is going quicker than the rear drivers side. I can slow and even stop the rear drivers side whilst the other continues at its rate... all this whilst in 1st gear with the engine running. resistance against the ground will surely slow it no?

in fairness I didn't try the old spin one way joby

An open diff will put power to the wheel with least resistance and none to the one with any resistance. If you had one wheel on tarmac with grip (eg you were holding it) and one on ice, the one on ice would just spin itself merry.

£1,500 now :)

As an aside, the way traction control works on an open diff is to apply the brakes on the spinning wheel to provide some resistance so both wheels then get drive.

Also, the reason an open diff works like this is so that the wheels can rotate at different speeds when you go around a corner.

£2k.

Blooming hope your all right!  still not convinced... will have a play around tomorrow evening to see whats going on.

Bibo If you can forward me the invoice... what are payment terms to, can I do instalments? perhaps with a negative APR?

I will be needing the money to pay for the new manifold that's required... steel or cast iron? that is the question!

So you know nothing about diffs and it appears we know all about them and you're not convinced?

We're gonna be at £10k before the end of the day!

Easier and safer test with the engine not running: engine off, box in (any) gear, jack up one rear wheel, and you wont be able to turn it. Out of gear, you will be able to turn the wheel.

Jack up both wheels, box in gear, and if you turn one, the other will turn the opposite way.

I agree with Hopo, there's something not right here. Have tou tried th same thing with the front wheels and the engine off? If you can spin the offside wheel and the nearside remains stationary it will point to the nearside helical diff locking pin AO825413F being the culprit. This can be fitted either with gearbox in or out of the car but when in situ the car needs to be raised greater than 45 degrees on the nearside to prevent oil loss.

I'll get around to it at some point.

I reckon you have brake drag on one side. That'll slow down the rotation of that side, and the other side will go faster due to the diff working. What happens if you operate the handbrake on just the side that goes fast? You'd have to do that by operating it directly at the handbrake caliper. If the other side speeds up, then you've proved the diff works...and if the engine labours or stalls, you've proved the brake is dragging on the slow rotation side.

Some really helpful and useful suggestions here folks.... Some less so. Will have a look at the next opportunity. Thanks for the pointers. Guessing I shouldn't be driving it?!?

Plus with "prices soaring" and all this talking up of the market I think £67,000 would be a good place to start the bidding

On the contrary, the Esprit is meant to be driven! You have described nothing that could be considered a real problem, worst case a little bit of drag on one of the brakes. But not too much, as both wheels were spinning.

So go out and enjoy it instead of worrying. ;-)
