Yea, that was a ~'98ish issue of Motortrend magazine and TV show.

The Esprit was redline limited in 5th... They thought it could go faster.

The viper broke a coolant line and had to be replaced.

I might still have that magazine article

Still think the Esprit was/ is the best looking of the bunch! Much rather be seen in an Esprit than a fat Viper!

I've done 184.4miles/hour in my S4s in the Outback in August. And that was with mechanical boost only (0.65bar) as I had an ECU fault, so I couldn't get her past 6,000rpm in 5th. Plus a passenger and a boot full of luggage.

I have the longer 5th gear from Marcus if you are wondering.

Hah, bring a Lotus to a shoot out and one of the 'reliable' cars breaks a hose :)

Neal's had his going pretty fast - standard horse power / drag the car should do about 196mph if the 5th gear is made longer which was the comdey behind the '5th gear' balls up, if they'd have put all the money they wasted into modifying the car into renting a longer runway they could have got the correct result.

Number 2, the 'longer' the gear, the lower the ratio and the more mph can be attained per rpm.

Yeah, I got 179 at VMAX and the car was still accelerating through the timing beams but the runway was running out!

A sixth gear would definitely help - at that speed the engine's at 7k rpm, significantly past the maximum bhp at 6.5k.

May: DON'T hit it with a hammer!

Clarkson: Why?

May: Cause it's the tool of a pikey.

wow thats fast

did you have a GPS? is your car otherwise stock?

ive only been able to get mine to about 155mph before running out of road - not a problem in the outback though i guess

That was the GPS figure.

I have the red race chip, larger secondary injectors, no cat 3" exhaust, K&N, upgraded fuel pressure switch - she dynoed at 361hp.

The longer 5th gear I had installed is good for a top speed of 307kph.

I topped out at 295kph, and I couldn't figure it out why I couldn't get over 0.65boost and she wouldn't go over 6,000rpm in 5th.

After we brought the car back home and ran the Tech1, we found that the 'Check Engine' light bulb was blown.

So since the light was blown, the ECU couldn't warn if something would be wrong, so it would automatically cut boost down to 0.65bar.

I was gutted. I spent $15,000 to prep and get the car up there in the Outback (part of the Exotics in the Outback run) and I couldnt' see what she could do properly.

And there's no chance of ever doing it again as since 1st of Jan it's illegal to drive with unlimited speed there.

You can see / hear her here in the Outback:

Kind of strange that 5th gear couldn`t get the Esprit to go 200mph. I am pretty sure that Esprit had about 600hp, but trouble with cooling, clutch and oil leaks etc.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN! THE ESPRIT IS LIKE YOUR HONEY, SHE`LL SPEND YOUR MONEY!!!

Fifth Gear is filled with a bunch of biased idiots! If I can get my Esprit to 175mph on my own with no mods. I can get it over 200 with the mods they had. The only other mod I would have done was to raise the rear spoiler to create more,r ear, downforce. The rear end is to light and needs help with downforce at those speeds.

could you recommend me a supplier for the 5th gear replacement

also the upgraded fuel switch and 2ndary injectors?

cheers

Rob

As far as I can tell the long 5th gear is from the V8 box, so you already have it! The idea is to fit the V8 5th gear (31 teeth) to the 4 cylinder (32 teeth as standard).

The large secondary injectors referred to are also to replace the standard items in the 4 cylinders plenum. Not sure if equivalent items exist for the V8...

In the garage no-one can hear you scream

All the parts mentioned above came from Marcus - PUK.

He also has great quality nolathane bushes, much better than I found anywhere else. I fitted a whole set to the car and it made a great difference compared to previous nolathane bushes I had on.

I also have grooved and drilled brake discs and uprated pads. And I also have fully adjustable dampers and springs (adjustable for height and dampness).

I figured that if I am making her so quick and fast, might as well make her stop and handle better too.

Also I have GPS figures of 0-100kph in 4sec flat and the quarter mile in 12.2sec.

All my parts are either from Marcus or from SJ. Other things like cold freezing the 2nd gear, I have had done here by local guys.
