A joke for everyone.

Q) What is the difference between Richard Nixon and Donald Trump?

A) Richard Nixon was honest.

Lol - really. Come on guys there's a bit of historic nostalgia and rose tinted specs here. Nixon was undoubtedly worse as he was so deceitful and went to great lengths to cover it all up.

Whereas Trump is so daft he just puts it all out there on Twitter and doesn't have the ability to be dark, sinister or Machiavellian about it.

So to say Nixon was more honest than Trump really is the joke in my very humble opinion.

Now, if you'd said Trump was a joke.......

My point was that Nixon was dishonest to the Public but honest to Himself. He wasn't trying to make up a reality that didn't exist therefore he did not lie to himself. Trump tries to create a reality that he believes exists or wants to exits thus he is very dishonest to himself.

I think that's perhaps speculative in an absolute sense.  , Regarding Nixon's "honesty," It's hard to say with certainty that he wasn't convinced that his actions were justifiable,  in his mind and more especially lately, the minds of many conservatives.  There has been a steadily increasing rearrangement of historical "facts" that attempt to exonerate Nixon, always on partisan grounds. In reality, he was a dishonest creep with a foul mouth (very un-Quaker like),  a vindictive streak and known associations with organized crime.

If one thinks he didn't gloss over those traits when self-evaluating, one might reconsider, although now I'm speculating!   Lately, a lot of Americans are prepared to to just do that in the "battle to the death against socialist creep"  that makes it impossible for any Republican (except Bush 2, a RINO) to do any wrong.  Very tribal thinking, such notions are difficult to alter in their minds because belief trumps fact, mainly because they don't pay attention day to day. .  There's no way of knowing if Nixon was contrite but he stopped well short of acknowledging any wrong doing in public.

That said, no president in our history was as bat shit crazy as Trump is.

I think were you took about "dishonesty" what you really mean is deluded/delusional, in other words "Trump tries to create a reality that he believes exists or wants to exist thus he is very deluded/delusional".

I think Nixon absolutely knew he was being downright dishonest to everyone including himself.

For me the pertinent difference between them is that thankfully back then we didn't have a portal into the mind of Nixon, unfortunately now there seems to be a neural link from Trump's mind to his Social Media streams. That's a disturbing picture of his mind, the mind of the man with the big button to make the world a dustbowl.

Delusional is just a polite or PC way of saying that the person is lying to themselves.

I am wondering and possibly our US members can let us know how this works?

As I understand it, once there has been an election and there is a new president elect decided, that he should be included on daily security, Covid briefings etc.

I am led to believe that this is not happening due to Trump's ongoing challenges to the democratic process.

At any point, do his actions become illegal or non-constitutional? If there is, who enforces it?

It is actually not up to Trump but a group called the GSA. Unfortunately, Trump appointed a loyalist to the management position and that person will not release the funds, etc. until the election results have been certified. This could be stretched until the Electoral College votes and that election is certified by Congress. This could push everything off until mid-December.

If Trump would concede then the process could start now.

The more I learn (and thanks Eldon for the above) the more I think that we got it wrong in the UK. Johnson is not Trumps son. That's preposterous. But Corbyn is his long lost brother! I mean, their behaviours in their attempts to cling on to office at any cost are the same almost...

Correct.  The hang up is that Trump gutted many agencies and installed unqualified but loyal minions to do his bidding .  The GSA is one agency he rearranged some time ago, likely in preparation for this day.  He has corrupted the process and while he retains the title, it's hard if not impossible to work around him and his henchmen.  He is capping off the daily damage he already has done with a total disregard for what comes after him.  Scorched earth, l'etat c'est moi, apres nous, le deluge.  That's really his goal, to throw a spanner in the works,  since the election results will not change no matter how hard he wishes it so.

The only good news about those unwarranted pardons is that the recipients can no longer refuse to answer questions, (plead the 5th amendment  in American parlance) and must answer  questions while on the stand without the usual protections afforded by the constitution against self-incrimination.  In other words, they can't claim things like "executive privilege" and they definitely can't refuse to answer or lie while under oath without the possibility of severe repercussions.

This may become a factor down the road if Democrats elect to pursue any related crimes aggressively.

Well, it seems that telling voters that the election is rigged has an effect. One of making people that believe him, not bothering to vote. Somehow he seems to be the only person that couldn't see that chain of events.

I am just trying to figure out his long game. He is found out that it is easier to make money as a politician because people just give it to you. He has also figured out how to redirect it so that it goes in to his pocket. So, the question is, How long can he keep up this grift?
