Brake Vibrations

Recommended Posts

Switched to Pagid Rs14 yesterday.

I've now got a slight rotational noise coming from the front passenger side (stops when braking and stand still).

Also under hard braking seem to have a 'shudder' or vibration.

Am I safe to assume these are all symptoms of the pads just need bedding in properly and will sort themselves out?

If the pads were the only thing you've changed and they were fitted correctly then that's a safe conclusion. Might be worth taking them apart again to make sure it's nothing obvious, or giving it a few miles until they bed fully to the discs.

Seems as though I may have been too aggressive on bedding in...

After speaking with Dave at Seriously Lotus I'm re-doing the bedding in but this time a little more gently and progressive which seems to be working...

Must say Dave has been excellent and calling over the weekend on a Sunday to check all okay and to help. Great service.

Real test will be Silverstone on Sunday (praying for no rain!)

Diagnosis: Warped disks :(

Need new discs.... Are the standard oem discs too soft for the Pagid RS14? Are the cup 2-piece discs made of a higher grade material thats better matched for the pagids?

Imran,

While warped discs could be your problem and the symptoms can be "vibrations/juddering" under light braking, those same symptoms could also be caused by uneven pad transfer/pad "smear".  RS14pads are notorious for uneven pad transfer to the discs when they are not bedded-in properly.  And, in my experience, RS14 pads are not easy to bed in ….. I hate those pads. ;)

Good to hear.

When I experienced this same problem back in 2007 with my Cup255, I ended up finding some very aggressive "metalic-compound" pads which I could use as "cleaner" pads.

Easy to install, run a few laps on track or do 50 or so miles of normal street driving (until the pads look clean/shiny), re-install your desired pads and go back to the bedding-in process. This method was easier for me than removing the disc and having them milled.

As I said in my earlier post I got on with RS14s for about 2 laps in my S2 Exige (already fitted and bedded in by previous owner) before horrendous judder from material transfer. :(

Thats pretty much my plan Jack ;)

Looks like I have the same issue after a wet afternoon in Spa ... might not have cooled down long enough ... were you able to resolve the issue Imran or did you end up getting new discs? only front?

In the end I just upgraded everything to the KoBra4 setup and not looked back since. Always on point and not had any issues whatsoever!

Thanks Imran ... I will check this weekend, if I can get rid of it on the next 200 km ... if not the KoBra4 seems to be the logical choice ... did you upgrade the front or front and back?

Hi Norbert. Pleasure to meet you at Spa on Thursday. I trust you got home ok.

Interesting to hear about your brakes. Mine sometimes start vibrating towards the end of a session, and did during the afternoon's wet running at Spa, much like yours. However once cool the brakes always seem to be fine again. I assume you're also on standard pads like myself.

Hi Arun,

please to finally meet you as well ;-) Your Cup looks even better in the flesh then on the pictures!

I have experienced what you described a couple times already... and had no issues afterwards. But this time its after cooling and much more vibration... I really think cooling down for 1/2 a lap wasn't enough after approx. 50min on track in the rain. I underestimated how brake killing Spa can be. My bad...

I have the standard / standard brakes ... I think you have the AP Racing Upgrade in your Cup as standard. I might now just do a brake upgrade to the KoBra4 ... looks like its not far cost wise from replacing the OEMs anyway...

Spa was great fun ... I will definitely be back... ;-) You should think about Bilster Berg in August... its really a phenomenal track.

Cheers

Norbert

The KoBra 4 setup is front and back and includes everything you need. Performance Friction components. Just be aware that the setup does include larger discs and the callipers run very close to the inner alloy wheel, just something to be wary of when sticking on weights when balancing wheels. It isn't an issue just something to be aware of and explain to your tyre fitter at the time of tyre changes etc..

This is one of the key reasons for me switching the KoBra setup was roughly the same cost as going OEM and included the larger disc setup.

Thanks Imran! This is good to know and keep in mind ...

One more question: What about road usage of the Kobra? Are they still ok and have decent cold breaking power?

Cheers

They seem okay but I'm being vague only because the car is rarely used on the road these days and is mainly used on track
