REAR VALANCE FIXING

Recommended Posts

Gents,

just finished to restore my rear valance and seeing the parts list I found different way to fix it on the car S2 vs S3

Spire nut-rubber nut- or what? Does anyone have some pics of the valance mounted on the early S3 cars?

Thanks

Giorgio

The parts book shows the fixings. Pulsert (aluminium expanding insert) on outer ends and nut/bolt in the middle.

You could just use nyloc nuts/bolts with large washers. The inserts are used all over the car and are terrible things as the bolt corrodes into them and when undoing the whole thing just turns.

I was thinking to use rubber nuts to prevent vibrations, what do you think?

Rubber would cause vibrations surely not prevent? No, just bolt it up solid as it was originally.

When I took mine apart, all the pulserts just rotated and would not unscrew. Had to rip them out by main force and driling. Replaced them with steel nutplates, big washers/ plates, stainless bolts and Copaslip antiseize. All been fine, since....

Yes I stocked up here when I did the engine bay surround (a day to get the 3 bolts out on the left side!):

Jolly sophisticated....I made mine from mild steel plate and nuts welded on...(!) Back in the days before I got a welding set, I even soft soldered the nuts to the plates. Never thought of buying the things..... Must be the residues of the Scot's blood.....

Just taken all the engine surround panels out in less than an hour...taking it gently.... Long 1/4" drive extensions are very useful for the side panels, you can get at the nuts more easily. Also a bit of masking tape over the bolt heads holds them in the socket...then they just undo and lift out. Also great for fitting them back again.
