Brake pads caught just in time!

Recommended Posts

I was fitting my nice new stainless mudguard brackets from Michael, and thought I  would just pull out one of the front pads to check wear as at the last service they advised they were getting low.........  Apart from being pretty near the wear limit, there was a fracture line and a chunk fell away.  New pads ordered today :)  Went for Ferodo DS2500 as per OE as its mainly a road car with the odd trackday. This was the first pad change at 18k miles.

Before and after mud guard brackets  - mine weren't too bad, 3 out of the 4 screws came out and only had to drill one.

My little Honda Civic that I drive has a piece of stainless steel that is attached to the back of the pad and touches the disc when the pad has reached the end of its service life.

Makes a hell of a racket. You can't miss it.

True, but the chunk falling out may have been due to the pads reaching their service life and becoming thin?

Also, the inner pad seems to wear more than the outer on the Evora.

So when I changed mine, I had left it a little too late... Outer pad had 3mm left, inner pad had NOTHING and was backing plate against disc.
Hence, I changed both front discs and a set of pads all round.

EliseShop were best value for discs and Demon Tweeks (phone for forum discount) for Ferodo DS2500 pads.

'They should' being operative here. I have never seen a pad wear evenly to the backing plate.

I have seen quite a few with a piece of pad missing though, that are thin.

The missing chunk only came off when I was inspecting it - it was actually in situ prior to me pulling the pad but the fracture line was there and it was loose, so would have come off pretty quickly if I had left it. Apart from this, pad wear was even on this pad. This was the outer OSF pad, but as I have had no nasty squealing sounds, I don't think there has been any pad / disc contact on either front brake. And, Demon Tweaks were best - £96 inc vat and delivery

Changed my pads today since I've had the discs refurbished. One of the rear pads turned out to be broken. A bit scary since the car has only done 3900 km. I've seen this on another Evora here in Sweden as well. Makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the material in the OEM pads???

The discs looks good after being refurbished. Still margin left to the lower limit.

Be interested in your views on the PF pads. I stuck with the Ferodo DS 2500 pads at £95 for the pair as I had been happy with them on the road and also track. If PF's seem better, with no downsides (apart from cost) then I may change next time ...........about 4 years away :)

I've used DS2500 before on my Opel Speedster and I was quite happy with them. Although that's a lighter car.

I replaced my brake pads this weekend as well.  OEM pads still had a lot of wear left at 10,000 miles but, as others have found, one of the pads was beginning to fall apart and had a large chunk fall out of it even though the rest of the pad had a lot of material left.  Glad I replaced.

Having had my wheels off to do some cleaning I thought I'd check my pads/disks based on this thread - I've done nearly 30k miles and the fronts look like this with literally no lip on the discs. The rears are as new.

So I'm interested in what mileage other people are getting as I think 100k miles might be achievable :lol::lol:

On another note I noticed I think I need some of Michael's brackets too!

Do you actually use your brakes?

It seems not, as Jonny's alluded too; I think I may have frightened him by my lack of braking for corners!

Although I'm on my 3rd set of disc and pads on my daily driver in 75k miles. However, that tends to be through warping rather than wear - I think I'm a hard and late braker rather than a brake tapper.

Funny @Whitey@Whitey but at 18k miles, 5 years old my Evora had a service and same issue when brake pads checked - crack lines and chunk fell off. That's two at 18k miles! Coincidence?

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

Were your's fairly near the wear indicators also?  I don't think 18k miles is bad out of a brake pad set especially with spirited driving plus a few trackways, but you don't normally expect bits to fall off when they are low - or perhaps that's normal. Very pleased I replaced mine all round anyway, and car is still going (and stopping!) great.

Yes fairly low and needed doing. No complaints from me, 6 years and q8k miles was fine and noticed a significant improvement with new pads, as you'd expect. Discs where fine too.

Chunks of the pad material coming away like that isn't going to kill you, it's probably been like it for many thousands of miles and only when you have removed the pad has it then fallen off. While they are still housed in the calliper the broken chunk of pad will still be in situ working as it should against the disc.

What you don't want to see is the pad material coming away from the back plate, that might kill you…!!!
